ferrousland as a domain name has been around since the 27th of july, 2000. i had ferrousangel.com before that for maybe a year, but i'm only guessing. it could have been less time than that.
ferrousland the site has been through a few incarnations. i still have copies on my hard drives of two previous versions, but i don't have any images of them online. the very first two versions were really crappy, but the ones after that weren't so bad. at the time of writing this (june 2004) it's perhaps up to version five if you count the really crappy versions way back when.
ferrousland is run mostly using movable type.
i employ as much php, my web language of choice, as possible to make it easier to do things on the site which may be repeated on many pages, or simply to do cool things such as make the buttons appear on the front page. i can't take credit for the buttons code though, that was jade. there are plenty of other things which i use php for but i can't recall all of them now. most of them are pretty simple little things just designed to make my life easier.
aside from what movable type does, i hand code everything else. i don't use a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor. i'm a nerd like that.
ferrousland is hosted with pair. they're very cool. they've always been really helpful with everything, even when problems were non-existant & it was just me being a big dork. it happens more than i'd like to admit.
it started out when my original online nickname was angel. when it came time to register a domain name for myself (as is wont to happen when you spend as much time online as i do) angel.com was obviously not available (actually, i never checked. i just assumed that such a name wouldn't be) so i had to think of something to add to it. shroom helped me think of a new nickname which would then also become the name of my site.
i have a few piercings, so i was thinking of 'iron angel, 'metal angel', etc, you get the point. none of those were quite right, until shroom suggested 'ferrous angel'. that is, ferrous as in ferrous metals, those which contain iron. now this is not entirely suitable when it relates to piercings, since you really wouldn't want any ferrous metals through holes in your body, but it had a nice ring to it, so my new nickname & my site was thus called 'ferrous angel'.
here is where you'll rightly point out that my site is called 'ferrousland', not 'ferrous angel'. originally i registered the domain ferrousangel.com through one of those places which keep the rights to the domain name & simply use a forwarding mechanism to point to wherever your site is hosted, since i only had the free website hosting which is given with most internet connections.
when i did eventually get paid hosting, i had to think of a new domain name & 'ferrousland' was it.
