he has my ..

riley has my hands, the little pinkie finger with the top of the finger that bends inwards a bit & the so-called 'double-jointed' thumbs that bend backwards when fully flexed.

he has shroom's eyes so far, a dark grey-blue, although that could change over time, since lots of babies are born with blue eyes.

his ears are the same shape as shroom's, with a little lumpy shape along the side of his ears in the same place as on shroom's ears.

he also has little pink spots behind his head, down low, under the hair line, just as shroom still does & as his brothers & nephews do.

he has shroom's lovely olive skin, it's a beautiful colour, & shroom's oily italian skin. already he gets a greasy nose!

he has shroom's head, with the sort of long shape from shin to crown.

strong legs

yesterday (wednesday the 9th of october) riley stood on his legs. he looked as surprised as i was. i was holding him for balance, & he wasn't lifting himself up & down on his legs, but he was definitely supporting his own weight. they list that as an advanced skill for a two month old! riley is only four weeks old today. my strong little boy. *smile*

head lifting

at one week old, riley could already lift his head & hold it up. he's rather strong, i think, because by three weeks old he can hold his head up for about thirty seconds at a time. they say they can usually only lift their head up for short amounts of time by one to two months old.

riley arrives

our baby boy, riley conrad, arrived by caesarian section at 6:50pm on thursday the 11th of september.

he weighed in at 2830 grams (approximately six pound three) & was 48 cm long (almost 19 inches).

aside from having some laboured breathing & being a little bit cold, he was happy & well. he did spend the first three nights in the special care nursery, but that was mainly because he was a little small & they were supplementing his input with feeds via a nasal gastric tube.

he arrived home with mum on tuesday the 16th & has been treating us very well. he feeds like a champion & sleeps like a log. i think he's read the book on how to be the perfect baby. *smile*

oh .. & of course, he's absolutely gorgeous.

general pre-birth info

rudegere's official due date is the 26th of september.

rudegere is the inutero name we've given him until he is born. we've been referring to him as 'he' but only so that we don't call him 'it' which i think is a bit rude since he is a boy or a girl, we just don't know which yet. i had an ultrasound at about twenty weeks, but we didn't want to find out if he's a boy or a girl. we want the surprise at the end.

i'm happy to have a boy or a girl, as long as the baby is healthy & happy. i would prefer a girl, but mainly because i'm one of two sisters & i wouldn't know what to do with a boy. shroom would prefer a boy for the same kind of reason, he's one of three boys & wouldn't know what to do with a girl. so between the two of us, we should manage fine. *smile*

i plan to have a natural birth, but there's a second placenta floating around in there, so i'll be having another scan at thirty-six weeks (officially, that is on friday the 29th of august) to see where it's lying in the uterus. if it's in the way then i may have to have a caesarian. i'd prefer not to, but as my sister said, if this was thirty or fourty years ago, we'd know nothing about it until the time of the birth & then rudegere & myself might end up in major distress or worse, so at least this way we'll both be happy & healthy.

in the meantime, i'm thinking positively & rudegere & i are working on making sure that the placenta is safely out of the way so that we can have a natural birth. *smile*
