turns out that all the problems we were having with the computer was due to a virus. some windows virus that attacks .exe files. for those who don't know what an .exe file is, the extension .exe means that it is an executable file. that doesn't mean that it's gonna get it's head chopped off or anything, it means that when you double click on the file, it'll start the program that you want to run. anyway, when you open a program that has the virus, anything that you open after that will get it too. so it spreads through your whole computer.
my honey stayed up all night monday night & fixed it for us. he's very clever & a bit of a legend. i think so anyway.
unfortunately, it seems that the virus checker program might not have cleaned up every file, or there may be some damaged files still, because it's started to freeze up again this morning. bummer.
