not so painful - 09:30 AM
it was a really long night at the hospital last night. i'm so tired today. neither of us got much sleep. the operation was a lot easier on shroom this time compared to the last one. he said that the pain was very minimal. i guess that not having packs in (read yesterday's diary entry to find out what they are) helped a lot in that regard.
when i arrived at the hospital yesterday around 6:30pm, he had only just woken up. he had that wide-eyed look he gets when he's a bit disoriented. it was so good to see him. i brought him a flower (a yellow fresia) & the nurse that was attending to him said "oh look, a flower!". my darling responded by saying "a human flower" meaning me .. he's such a charmer.
they served him dinner at around 7pm so once i made sure that he had everything he needed i found a restaurant nearby that did take-aways & got myself some dinnner to take back with me to his room so i could eat with him.
he was very pleasantly surprised at the lack of pain, even after the anaesthetic had worn off. i settled down beside his bed & we talked for a while until he got tired & went to sleep. i had a lie down on the spare bed near his bed but when i woke up a little later i was informed that i couldn't sleep there. i was kind of pissed off & felt like crying when she said that (i was rather tired at this point & a bit emotional too) but since i'd brought a camping mattress (one of those self-inflating ones that fold away really small) i lay on that on the floor beside his bed.
shroom got up about every hour or so because of the discomfort of his nose & also because he had to pee quite often from being on a drip. every couple of hours we went to the staff cafeteria & sat outside on the verandah with a cup of tea while he had a cigarette or two. when we were out there, the nurse that had told me that i couldn't sleep on the bed came out to have a break. she told me that she'd come in & found me on the floor but didn't want to wake me. she then said that there was a recliner chair that i could sleep in if i wanted to. excellent! when we went back inside she brought the big chair in & offered me a blanket too. it was so much more comfortable than the floor. i liked her again after that. i stayed in the recliner for the rest of the night.
shroom is a typical guy when it comes to pain. he doesn't seem to want sympathy or anything, he just gets grouchy. it was a bit hard because i was trying to be really nice & help as much as i could but every now & then he'd get grumpy at me because of the pain. it made me a bit emotional & the lack of sleep didn't help either. anyway, even though sometimes he was in too much pain to show it i know that he appreciated me being there & helping him .. & he's got the flower that i bought him beside his computer now so that he can look at it.
i'm really glad that he came through it okay. it's awful to see him suffering. of course, it'll still be painful for quite a few months while it heals, but at least the worst part's over.
