two?! - 06:20 PM

i had my regular appointment with my obstetrician today & i gave him the report from the guy that did the ultrasound yesterday.

there was something rather interesting in there. it turns out that there are two placentas! my doctor said that it's not a concern except for something to do with some blood vessels or something-or-other. no need to worry unless i start bleeding, anyway, which i haven't done since i had some minor bleeding from around week five to perhaps week eight.

the earlier bleeding put together with the presence of the second placenta though, means that it's possible that rudegere used to have a little sister or a brother in there with him! that's pretty amazing. some might be upset about the fact that there's now only one out of a possible two, but i'm not. obviously the little one wasn't quite as it should have been, so he or she decided to leave early, giving rudegere some more space to grow big & strong. it's nice to think that the tiny one chose me to grow in, even if it wasn't going to hang around for the whole time.

the bleeding was so light over that time that it was never obvious as to if there was something wrong, or if it was just some breakthrough bleeding or even a kind of period. it's not usual, but some women actually continue to have their periods all the way through their pregnancies. if it was a little one leaving me, i'm glad i didn't know at the time, because i would have just worried & it would have made me sad.

all that aside though, everything else is going well. my mum expressed some concern about my fingers being a bit puffy in the morning, since it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia which for her turned into eclampsia with the birth of my sister, & two years later, more severe with my own birth. the obstetrician, however, said that on its own, it's nothing to worry about. if i became suddenly very puffy in the fingers & the face, combined with blinding headaches, then i should worry, but at this stage, a little puffiness is normal.

so all in all, things are going just as they should. *smile*

Wow, I had two placentas with my second pregnancy. The presence of the second placenta caused me to go into premature labor from the 7th month on though. The docs kept giving me a drug to stop labor. She was born a month early, but was okay.

I actually "delivered" the second placenta a week after our daughter was born, right at home. It's a blessing that the second embryo stops growing early like that, it helps us not to feel that we lost a twin.

So take care of yourself, and make yourself aware of any lower back pain that won't go away. Let your ever increasing "mum instincts" guide you.
