packing - 09:18 PM
i started packing today. since i won't really be able to do much (well, any) of the actual moving of boxes & furniture to the new house, my contribution to the move is the packing since it only involves putting things in boxes & no heavy lifting.
when you have a whole house to pack it's hard to know where to start. especially when the move isn't actually for a few weeks so some things such as certain items of clothing & some kitchen gear have to stay unpacked.
i decided to start with our bedroom, & first my shoes. i'm not an imelda marcos, but over the years i've collected quite a few shoes. it's one of the hazards of being a woman. men only have to have shoes that can go with either long pants or short pants, casual or formal, but womem's clothes can be skirts or pants or shorts or dresses, anywhere from floor length to really mini. so basically, it requires a few more pairs to find something suitable for the outfit.
i chose a large box to start with & i ended up filling it almost to the top with all of my shoes. actually, it wasn't even all of my shoes, i also filled a garbage bag full of the shoes that i haven't worn for years which will be going to st vinnie's or some place similar. if i preferred sandals or court shoes they probably wouldn't have taken up so much room. as it is though, i'd estimate that more than half of the shoes i own are boots of some description. knee-high's or calf length (lace-up or zip up), doc martens (three pairs) or my blundstones (two pairs). there was just enough room to fit shroom's shoes in the top .. all of about five pairs.
after that i moved to my bed-side set of drawers which is mostly any type of clothing that doesn't require hanging, like shorts, t-shirts, jumpers, jeans, that type of stuff. most of it i can't wear at the moment anyway, since my belly is so big, so i left unpacked a few pregnancy shirts & some loose or hipster pants that i'm able to wear, as well as underwear & socks.
to save us having to move more than neccesary, i also went through the cupboard & took out a lot of stuff i know i'll never wear again. it's something i should have done years go. no joke, i found about eight pairs of jeans which i didn't even remember i owned. i have no idea how i collected so many. i think that a lot of them must have been second hand ones from my mum or my sister, because there was a big range of colours. i was kidding myself if i ever thought i would wear any colour jeans other than blue. since most of them were never terribly comfortable anyway, i put all of them into another garbage bag to go to st vinnie's, along with a few tops & shirts which i know i'll never wear again. most of them are really nice & not necessarily out of date, so i'm sure that someone will appreciate wearing them.
we don't expect any problems with buying the new house, but regardless, the place we're in now will be sold soon enough so we have to make sure to have our stuff packed & ready for that anyway.
next i might start in the spare room, then perhaps the downstairs room which is absolutely chockers with all sorts of things, including all our scuba gear. most of it we don't use on a regular basis, so i can just pack all of it. mind you, we'll also be going through it & deciding how much of it is just junk that we've managed to collect which we don't need or want anymore. once we've packed all the other stuff up we might have a garage sale if there's enough which might be of any worth to other people. you know what they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure .. or something like that.
*sigh* .. big job, but one box at a time, i suppose.
i too hate packing. but, now you get to REALLY toss things away you were undecided as to keep or not before. the ultimate in spring cleaning; moving!!
One hazard of moving is discovering stuff you get engorged in like old material from school, books you didn't knew you had etc.
It's a tough job
A clean sweep! An excellant chance to be RUTHLESS, you need to make room not only emotionally and mentally for the baby, but phyically as well. (Rather you than me) Good luck!
Good on you for getting in early and doing it! I always leave everything to the last minute and it always takes longer than you expect. I was surprised how much stuff I accumulated in Japan and how long it took me to clear out my room.I hardley slept during my last few days coz it took so long to sort everything out. Then once you've emptied out everything, theres always the joy of the cleaning bit that follows..........
Packing can be tiring too. Moving is exhausting, especially when you have a houseful to move. It's exciting too, new places to put things, decorating, making a house a home. Tiring but fun!
I hate packing
