won't come around very much - 10:45 AM

shroom's mum is funny. not funny-strange, i mean funny-haha.

she came out with me when i arranged an inspection of this house (& another one which wasn't suitable) about two months ago. she was very good to have with me, because she used to work in real estate & knew what sort of things to look out for.

on the drive out here, she remarked about how far away it was. she said (not unkindly) that it was really quite far away & that she wasn't sure she'd be able to come to visit all that often since it was so far away from their place. she also said that when the baby was born that she wouldn't be able to baby sit very often for the same reason. i said, "well, we can bring the baby to you."

"oh yes," she replied, "but then you'll have to stay overnight. you can't go driving home so far late at night."

as she was saying these things i was laughing on the inside, because i could see that she really didn't want us to be so far away from her & rudi (that's shroom's dad, i'm not referring to rudegere) because she would miss us & because she was beginning to come over all grandmotherly, what with rudegere coming closer & closer to arriving. i told shroom about her comments later & he laughed, too. it's quite sweet, really.

at that stage, shroom hadn't seen the house for himself, so he talked to her over the phone to get her opinion on it. from what i'd already told him, he could see that i really liked it. in fact, i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it, even when i just drove past it for the very first time. audrey's comments weren't as glowing as mine, although she couldn't really place a lot of scorn on the place, but i think she probably also mentioned to him how far away it was.

move ahead in time to when we'd decided to purchase the house & settlement had gone through, we came over to the house on the saturday following settlement to check on the progress of the painters. audrey & rudi had called that morning & decided they'd meet us there to have a look too, since rudi hadn't seen it yet. he loved it straight away, of course, all that blank land to plant a garden on & wondered why audrey had been so down on it.

audrey commented to shroom again that she probably wouldn't come over very much, it being so far away from them. he told me that later & we both laughed.

fast forward now to a week or so ago when audrey called me up during the day & to arrange to come for a visit, which she did, & which was nice. then she called me up again a few days later to ask if i would do them a favour by collecting a garage sale item which was just down the road from us. she mentioned how rudi had kind of decided not to get these items, despite having looked for them for a long time because it was too far away. she'd told him, "it's not that far, it's only twenty-five minutes." this, from the woman who, in her own words, "probably won't come around very much." *chuckle* so i picked up the items & they came to visit in the next day or two.

they've visited us more over the past three weeks than they did when we were supposedly not so far away. *chuckle*

I guess they decided it wasn't that far away after all, and are (silently) making up for it *smile*
