going away with riley - 08:24 PM

riley & i had our first night away from home together last night. you see, i hosted an enjo demonstration at my mum's place (since it's a little closer in to town than our place, much more convenient for people to get to) & since it was in the evening & i've been getting tired while driving even in the early afternoon, i decided it would be safer to stay overnight. mum was pretty pleased about that. it meant more cuddles with riley for her. *wink*

i've been using cloth nappies all the time now, but i figured for a trip away ovenight i'd use disposable nappies (& disposable wipes too). i didn't like using them. his little bottom got really hot in them. every time i changed his nappy he was all sweaty in there, the poor little thing.

i probably packed too many spare clothes for him, since he only ended up needing two changes of clothes after a leaking nappy got one outfit & then i changed him into a bonds wondersuit (yes, as everyone has told me, they are excellent) for sleep time. well, for my sleep time. he has more than one sleep time than just at night, of course. if i hadn't packed that many changes of clothing though, he would have needed to be changed more often. it's like bringing an umbrella. if you take one, it won't rain, but if you don't take one, it will rain.

it was good practice for .. (begin brass fanfare: dum-diddy-dum-diddy-dum!!) .. going south for a week to show off riley to dad & tosca, & to mon & greg! woo hoo! i'm really looking forward to it. it might be a bit higher stress than usual, since riley will be with me, but it will be so worth it.

i've booked our flight to sydney to see monica & greg & the girls (good news on that front, britt & mon are back home from the hospital now) for monday night the 17th of november. i'll stay at mon & greg's place for three nights & then head to melbourne on the 20th to stay with dad & tosca. i'll then leave to go back home to brisbane on sunday morning, the 23rd.

monica's quite excited about meeting riley. i was excited about being an aunty when mon had her bubs, but she had to wait longer to become an aunty. i only thought about that today, actually. i mean, i've talked to riley about her & called her 'aunty monica' but i only realised today that she's a real aunty for the first time. greg has been an uncle for a long time, but mon's only an aunty to those kids by marriage, not by blood. it's different when it's your own sibling having the babies, rather than a sibling-in-law.

dad & tosca are really excited too, of course. tosca is excited because she loves babies, but dad's excited because it's his first grandson .. although he might not be like mum & have to see him naked to prove that he really is a boy in a family that makes almost all girls. *chuckle* *chuckle*

it'll be just myself & riley going, since shroom will be working, but i don't mind so much. it's probably a little less stressful for me to hang out with my family on my own since i don't have to worry about shroom being bored or getting sick of hanging out with my family or whatever. i mean, he likes my family, but it's almost always easier to hang out for long periods of time with your own family rather than with in-laws.

i'm really looking forward to finally being able to show riley off to everyone who hasn't met him yet. they're going to love him to bits & pieces, i just know it. *smile*

Of course they will love him to bits, and why wouldn't they? They will love him because they ... 1) love you and can see how much Riley means to you
b) love Riley for himself, because he is a gorgeous little hunk of spunk!
c) are wll mannered family members

I just wanted to give you a hint about the plane. When you are landing and taking off its best to nurse the baby so that they don't get ears that pop. It makes them more comfortable too in a strange situation *smile* .

Sounds like fun *smile* Wishing you a good journey and (no need there, really) a good time with your family.

Ooh, you're braving a plane trip too. What else can we have in common?

We're all heading over to Sydney for a few days in early December.

Debby's advice sounds good - I have read that nursing is a good idea to get their jaws moving and allow them to adjust to cabin pressure.

I am a bit scared about it - 4/5 hours, but if he kicks up a stink I am moving seats and blaming my husband *wink*

Good luck with your plane experience and your family visits. Hope you and Riley have a ball and Riley gets lots of love and cuddles.

Ditto the plane trip with feeding, most babies cry on the descent, and having once experienced that ear pain myself, I can sympathsise that it bloody HURTS!!! Obviously bubs cant blow their nose so a comfort breastfeed is just the shot. When older, use a Popper drink.
