merry christmas! - 07:37 AM

we held here, last night, the traditional christmas eve dinner which my mum's family celebrate every year. it was quite small compared to years past. only ten of us (well, eleven with riley, but we didn't need to cater for him to sit or eat) including shroom's mum & dad. years & years ago the gatherings were as large as perhaps forty people!

we really enjoyed hosting christmas in our home. my aunty renate & mum provided most of the food (veal schnitzel, a myriad of salads, & yummy after dinner food including apfelkuchen, which translated from german means literally apple cake, but is so much more than just that).

in my recent fit of cooking creativity, i contributed a trifle made from the leftover chocolate cake &, since melanie's summer pudding was so delicious the other night, i made one of those too. to say it went down very well indeed would be understating the case. my mum was so impressed, in fact, that she went back for a second helping! almost unheard of with my mum. aunty renate & mum both want the recipe. *smile*

after a full day with practically no sleep to speak of, riley finally went to sleep at about 8:30pm. during the evening, almost everyone snuck in to take an adoring look at him sleeping. just as well he's such a heavy sleeper. *chuckle*

this year, instead of the traditional christmas carol singing, we decided to do something a bit different. we had to bring along an original poem instead. not everyone had the time to write one, but the three which were performed had something nice or amusing to say about everyone there. rudi & audrey, shroom's mum & dad, instead of a poem, brought along a story about rudi's first christmas in australia. all the poems & the story were well received. it was really quite fun. i hope we do the same next year.

it was a truly wonderful evening, with a good time had by all. having family & friends here was such a nice way to spend our first christmas in our new house with our new baby. *smile*

It's after midnight, so technically it's Boxing Day but that doesn't matter. Your Uncle Jungle wishes all of you in ferrousland a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May joy always be your constant companion.
