cut toe! - 02:12 PM
smiley just cut his toe & i have no idea how!
he was playing near his high chair when he began crying a little bit, but it wasn't an "i've just bumped my head/fallen down/hurt myself a lot" cry, it was more of a hungry sounding cry. it was about time for a feed anyway so i picked him up & he fed for a bit until he fell asleep, then i carried him to bed where i was going to have a lie down with him. it was only then that i noticed that he had blood all over his foot!
i quickly grabbed a small, wet cloth & cleaned up the excess blood, which he slept through, to find that it came from a small, but relatively deep cut on the little toe of his right foot. he slept for another ten or so minutes while i lay next to him & apologised profusely & stroked his hand & wondered guiltily if there was any way in which i could have avoided this little accident.
i also had a really close look around the area where i found some blood on the carpet where he was playing was to see if i could find (& remove) the cause of the cut, but i haven't been able to find anything there which would have given such a sharp & neat cut.
it mustn't have hurt a lot for him to only give a bit of a whingy cry instead of a full on one, & for him to fall asleep quite happily, so it must have been something very sharp. (you know how cuts from something really sharp hurt less than a cut from something dull.)
he only gave a small whinge after he woke up & began crawling around the bed making the cut begin to bleed again, when i took him to the bathroom sink to gently rinse his toes to make sure the cut was all clean. i guess the water on the cut made it sting a bit. my brave little boy.
i took a picture of his cut while he was sleeping to record it for posterity. i also took a picture of the blood on the carpet & on my chair where i sat while feeding him before i knew that he'd cut his toe. i mainly took those pics to show how much his poor little toe bled & to make me wonder how on earth i could have missed it. somehow he ended up with a fair splat of blood on the outside of his nappy, too, directly under his bottom. maybe he was sitting on his cut toe for that to happen, because the patch on the floor is smaller & doesn't seem to match the pattern of blood on the seat of his nappy.
since his toes, even his big one, are far too small to allow a bandaid, i wrapped the end of his foot in a small cloth & put a sock over it to contain any more bleeding which might occur.
he's having no troubles crawling around so i guess it really is worrying me far more than it's worrying him. still .. my poor little baby! i'm so glad he's okay.

Awwww, poor lil'un. Such cute toes too!
Could it have been a staple embedded in the carpet? They can be darned hard to spot yet give quite a nasty cut.
Hope you gave him lots of 'kiss-it-better' kisses!
I can't believe the rate at which he's growing up ... an absolute cutie!!
i agree with the carpet staple or tack idea. it probably isn't where the blood is. he may have moved around considerably before it bled enough to pool like that.
