i'm not terribly active politically, & i wasn't even going to read the letter which was put into everyone's letterbox with "a message from the lord mayor" on the front of the envelope, but i'm actually a little bit sad to hear that jim soorley, or as he's better known, lord jim, is leaving public office after twelve years as brisbane's lord mayor.
i don't use australianisms much, but i would definitely describe lord jim as a 'good bloke'. i never met him in person but when seeing him on tv, he always seemed to be very approachable & generally a really nice guy. after twelve years in office, being elected four times, he had to have been doing something right, because he would have been voted out long ago otherwise.
