blog dogs - 04:02 PM
there's a really funny site which jade told me about a few days ago, but which i hadn't been to until last night when i saw it in snippets. the idea is that there are two dogs which offer their unique observations on the world & the human animals around them. it's pretty darn funny. blog dogs is worth a look. if you want to start on a particularly amusing entry, go here.
lots to do - 07:40 AM
now that the finance for the house has official approval there's lots to do. packing must be done in earnest. that's my job since i can't do any of the heavy listing required for the actual move.
so today, the plan is to shower & wash my hair (which i've been meaning to do for about three days but between running around with paperwork & potential buyers coming to see this house, i've still not managed to do it) & do some more packing. i might try to visit a paint shop too & get some sample pots of paint ready for trying out at the new house so i can have a colour ready for the painters once we get that arranged.
it's all so exciting!
termites - 05:55 AM
the pest inspection on our new place revealed there are two areas on the land that have termites. neither are major infestations & neither are near the house so it's not a big problem or even a matter of urgency.
i don't know much about the type of termites which are there. the man said that one area at the side of the house needs some better drainage (easily solved) & also mentioned a downpipe which should be let out further away from the house (also easily solved), so this indicates that the termites are of a type that like wet ground.
i don't want to spray chemicals around because of the possible side-effects not only to us, but to the land. also, i want to plant an organic food garden possibly right near one of the termite sites, so i don't want to be pumping dangerous chemicals into the ground.
the pest man suggested various physical ways to stop the termites getting to the house (which is brick anyway, but i guess they can still eat the inside of the house), such as those i mentioned above, which i plan to implement. i'm currently doing a bit of research on the net to find an organic solution to controlling the termites, but i figured i'd put the call out to anyone out there that might know of some companies which do organic pest control (preferably somewhere in brisbane) or else perhaps some sort of control which i can prepare & apply myself. any ideas are welcome.
the pest man was telling me of a chemical which they used to use up until about ten or so years ago, which was very effective against termites, but also really good against children too. sure, the chemicals they use now are less dangerous (well, no children are dying anymore) but who knows what they'll find in another ten years. it worries me enough that that kind of garbage is already in our soil, but i guess some things from the past just can't be avoided.
there are so many reasons to avoid more chemicals if i can find an alternative solution.
can't sleep - 04:56 AM
bah .. i can't sleep. i've been awake for about forty-five minutes. i woke up with the fingers of one hand in a bit of pain from the carpal tunnel syndrome. i hung it lower than the rest of my body & it came good, but since then i've been lying awake thinking about our new house & all the plans we have for it.
with thoughts running around in my head & one hand or the other getting sore when i lie on my side, i figured i may as well just get up.
