garage sale - 06:04 PM

the garage sale was moderately successful. we made $121 dollars, if you count my time as being free, since i spent four hours putting price tags on things (there were lots of little crappy $1 & 50c items & i also wrote on the tags what each item was so that people couldn't swap them with cheaper tags, so that took some time) & then another three hours sitting around while people turned up to look or to buy.
the best bargain would have to have been the fridge. $50 for an old with tiny rust spots, but perfectly functional fridge. one guy offered $40, but i said, no, full price. it was already a bargain! he then offered $45 but i held my ground. then he to tried rope some poor sod who happened to be standing around into helping him get it into the back of his van. not surprisingly, he wasn't interested. he got it in there in the end (fridges are relatively light when they're empty) & was surely happy with his purchase.
most things i discounted when people offered me less but a lot of people were happy just to pay the ticket price .. & so they should be really, when hardly anything was more than $5.
at about 11:30am (i'd opened the doors at 8:30am) i decided that it was quiet enough & i was bored enough to not bother with the rest. most of what was left was just crap anyway, so i displayed it all on the steps outside the two big sliding doors which open up to the driveway, put a sign up saying in big letters, "garage sale closed. help yourself to whatever is left here" then drove off by midday. i wonder if people took stuff? i won't be going back until monday, when we have to hand the keys back, so i'll find out then if the rest of the stuff has been taken away. if not, i guess i'll pack it into a garbage bag & put it into a charity bin.
