dying again - 07:17 AM
just for something completely different, my computer is dying again. i seem to have all the luck with hard drives.
my computer was left on last night, as is my usual practice, to allow it to run a nightly virus scan & do a backup of certain files to my backup hard drive, but when i got to it this morning, it was off.
it wasn't very happy booting up & was making the dreaded "whiiiir, clunk!" noises which i've become so familiar with. i managed to get it to boot up okay on the second try by pinching the back end of the drive between my thumb & forefinger during the whole sequence. probably just dumb luck, but when it's an actual physical problem with a drive like that, sometimes the position of the drive can make a difference, therefore i thought i'd try holding it.
regardless, i'm here now. i might send it along to work with shroom tomorrow to make a ghost copy onto a new drive for me. i'm pretty sure he just bought some new drives for our personal use recently, so perhaps i can use one of those. i think part of the problem is that i've always been using our old second hand drives as the working drive. this only goes to prove that they're old & second hand for a reason.

You're really out of luck there, aren't you? :-/
I've got my machine up and running 24-7 (except during holidays) since I got it in Sep. '99, and never had any hardware problems .. *knock on wood*
