damn computers - 05:26 PM
i've been having some weird error on my computer lately whenever i connect to the internet. it tells me, "windows must now restart because the remote procedure call service terminated unexpectedly" & then hey presto, it would give me sixty seconds (or something) to save my work blah, blah, blah & would reboot automatically. since this would happen about thirty seconds after i'd connect, i wouldn't even have a chance to google the error to see what others had to say about it.
i jumped on shroom's computer then to look it up. i managed to find something about it & followed the instructions to change some of the properties of this service in the services section so that i can at least do stuff online without it rebooting. other advice was regarding firewalls & to install the latest windows updates.
lo & behold though, about five minutes after being connected on shroom's computer it had the same error! shroom's not come across it before, so he had as much idea as i had.
i tried installing the latest windows updates but it gets as far as downloading it & then just sits there indefinitely saying "preparing to install" but doing nothing. okay, maybe not 'indefinitely', but i left it for at least twenty minutes & it hadn't moved. generally that's long enough for that sort of thing, even if it is going terribly slowly.
stupid bloody windows.
Wow! What a coincidence, my step-moms computer started doing the exact same thing tonight. It's actually a worm... I don't remember what it's called exactly. Right, the blaster worm. Here's some info on it.
Hope this helps a little!

yeah.. kept me busy today.
update your virus protection and your ms security patches
here's the link to the patch that the symantec gives you at the end of running the fix tool.
wouldn't you know it. we start the day today and someone has this problem. i had already read your news here. thanks for the heads up. saved the day here.
Getting latest antivirus updates right now, ms updates later if needed.
Thanks, Maria
No problems. This thing is pretty horrible, I heard it put the whole Maryland vehicle registration system out of commisson :S
Time to install a firewall on your internet. That would have prevented that. Lots of varieties.. software and hardware. In fact, the hardware are sometimes better. You hook them up and they let you share the computer connection as well.
Mine diverted 500 attempts on our network within 24 hours at the house. I'm glad we had it.
