five quails - 02:12 PM
on the way home from the shops a little while ago, i saw some tiny little birds crossing the road. they ran across the road in that particular way that most birds don't run & immediately i wondered if they were quails. they ran down into the ditch at the side of the road & i thought they might still be there so i stopped the car to have a look.
as i came close to where they were, they ran away a bit, trying to get further away from me. if they hadn't moved, i don't think i would have seen them, because they were very well camouflaged against the dry grass. i counted five of them. they were a darkish brown with tiny white spots. they were so cute. they must be wild ones. it's the first time i've ever seen quails outside of a cage.
gosh, i love living where we're living!
.. you'd never see that in suburbia.
Hi Coralie - how fascinating to hear about life on the other side of the world. I am still talking about the Roo hitting your car! Well, I have never seen quail in a cage. I am pretty sure it is against the law here. We have lots of quail out here and they are so cute. They travel in families, talking all the while. Mom leads, then the babies follow and Dad is last and he jumps on fences, etc. to check it out for safety. They are always in families until they grow up and mate for life. We must be careful when travelling on our side roads, because it seems there is always a little one that is following far behind and just when you think they have all crossed the road, another baby will come running by. We have cockatiels in cages and that is probably not allowed in your country. They would be so vulnerable here with the weather and the animals of prey.
yep, it's definatly nice living in an area where you can see native wildlife. We've lived here nearly 12 years and i'm still amazed by all the beautiful birds (cockatoo's, kookaburras, galahs, honeyeaters, butcher birds among others), not to mention the wallabies.Yep, we are blessed.
I can't remember if it was you or Jade that talked about eating quails eggs awhile ago. I ate quail eggs in Japan! and I would have to say that they were one of the few things that I did not enjoy eating.Yuck!Gross!.Don't do it!!.
