circumcision - 11:42 AM

i may be opening up a can of worms by mentioning this here, but it's my blog & i want to talk about it. i welcome your comments, but keep in mind that the decision is made, so please keep your comments constructive.

riley is being circumcised on thursday. i had the initial consultation with the circumcision guy yesterday & it all seems to be good. well, as good as any type of surgery can be. i mean, it's only minor surgery, i guess, but when you're only little like riley, any mucking around on your body is major. they use this little thing called a 'plastibell' which helps to tie off the foreskin safely, making it as pain free & safe as possible.

i pretty much left the decision up to shroom to make. i really don't know about these things & as long as they do the best thing by riley (which it seems they do, having met the doctor & learned about the procedure) then i'm happy to support his decision. he's spoken to a guy who was circumcised as an adult & heard the pros & cons from his point of view & (aside from being circumcised himself) he feels it's the best thing for him.

they've given me some anaesthetic cream stuff to put on his little willy two hours before. they don't let you be there when they do it. i imagine it upsets the parents too much to be there .. or maybe they get in the way. my poor little baby. i hope it doesn't hurt him too much. at least i'll be there afterwards to comfort him.

We had our first son circumcised at birth, no questions asked. We later heard how it was unnecessary, blah blah. SO, when our second son was born 4 years later, we didn't have him circumcised. Outcome? When he was 8 months of age the doctors said his foreskin was not relaxing enough, causing a circulation problem. The poor little guy was circumcised at 8 months of age.

You just never know when it's necessary, but having it done early on can be the best decision. He won't be old enough to tug and pull, and his notion of pain is not defined yet. Riley will be okay, mum. *smile*

It's a personal thing and to be honest, I've never heard anything very constructive either for or against the practise. As a circumcised male, I'm happy with my parents decision. Baby-boomer males were, on the whole, all circumcised anyway. Something to do with cleanliness. Conversely, both of my boys are un-cut and have both been educated in how to clean their genitals, so it's not a problem. Personally, I think the hoo-hah over the whole issue is just that.

Sorry but I don't agree. Nature & evolution does not produce anything without a purpose. In my book its unneeded mutilation in almost all cases. A barbaric practice carried out only because it was done to their fathers!
