viruses - 07:56 AM
.. or should that be virii? anyway, i got a good one just recently. supposedly from microsoft (security@microsoft.com) with the text, "Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now! There are dangerous virus in the Internet now! More than 500.000 already infected!" & an executable (patch.exe) attached to it.
i would hope that bona fide microsoft staff would have a better grasp of english, use correct punctuation & not so many exclamation marks. i hope that no one is silly enough to fall for this one. hmm, i know people will fall for it, so perhaps i should say instead, i hope that not too many are silly enough to fall for this one.
i have found some folks will download anything
Oh yes. Not suprised. Watch out for the Nachi (Welchia) worm (virus). Its a real bugger. Supposed to fix a security breach in win2000 and XP (yep, a genuine do gooder!) but if you aren't bang up to date with your service packs it will screw up the whole system. It causes a problem in RCP DCOM (service) and generates a whole new svchost.exe file which REALLY confuses windoze. This leads to all sorts of probs, by the way, Norton often misses it, get Stinger from McAfee, just go to their homepage.
