homeschooling - 09:12 PM
does anyone have any (educated) opinions on homeschooling? i don't know an awful lot about it yet, but i like the idea of it. i didn't necessarily hate going to school, but i can see how i would have benefitted from a homeschooling system. it seems there's a lot of learning time actually wasted by attending a traditional schooling environment.
does anyone know much about it or had any experience with it?

heaps of the blogs i read do homeschooling but they are all in the us/canada. i don't know anyone in australia who does it. a while back i searched for information about it and from what i understand it can be kind of difficult to do here as you need to have an actual qualified, registered teacher to supervise. i'm sure you can find that info anyway
if you want any of the links to the blogs i mentioned, lmk.

You should be able to get some info off your education ministry/dept about homeschooling. It should give you some idea of what is required in Ozland

Contact the Schoolof LOng Distance Education in West End. My sister in law home schooled, as she and her hubby are school teachers. Her kids are bright, but also obnoxious with a real contempt for state schools and everyone associated with them (although thats how their parents earn their living, sigh, something about biting that hands that feeds you?) anyway, check it out, its a lot of hard work. my boys went to state primary school, and they mangaged to surivie, and in fact, thrivbe. thats because i became interested and helped at the school, and (drum roll) the fgact is that the more you as a parent become involved in your childs education, the more the child will succeed. good luck!

We're homeschooling and love it! For example, my oldest (just turned five) can already read three-word sentences and is writing her own stories by sounding out longer words. There's no way I was doing that at her age. I also think I would have benefitted a lot more from being homeschooled since I've been able to see my own kids thriving from it.
Here are a few links I found back in February that might be useful when someone tries to zing you with the "but what about socialization!" angle:

I've got a lot more where those came from, so drop me a note if you'd like
