it's behind you - 06:20 AM

last night, while riley was sitting on shroom's lap on the couch, he reached out for shroom's mug which was sitting on the arm of the couch. it was empty, so it wasn't such as issue, but i told shroom, "he's got your mug!" as he managed to get his little hand around the handle of it. it was rather amusing, because he was quite fixated with this mug after that. even after shroom turned him around so that he was facing the other way & couldn't see the mug anymore, he kept reaching out behind him with one arm, not even trying to look, but still trying to get the mug.

he does that heaps. he'll be looking away from the thing he's reaching for, but still put one arm out with perfect aim to grab something on the other side of his vision. i can imagine when he's a bit older it'll be like the old distraction trick where you exclaim, "what on earth could that be!?" while pointing behind the person & then you grab something while they're looking away. his trick will be to keep eye contact with you while he reaches for something he's not allowed to have, hoping that somehow you won't notice him reaching for it. *chuckle*

Object permanence! It's one of those developmental landmark types of things, when they know that something that they're interested in is still there, just out of their line of sight. This is, as oddly as it manifests itself, a great thing. *chuckle*
