making new friends - 08:25 AM

i've met some nice people in the week that i've been here. i'm referring to people outside of shroom's work place. of course i've already met a few of his work mates.
the very first person i met on my own was a girl called jessica with a bub of her own. i stopped her outside woollies to ask if she knew where the woolworths discounted petrol was (spend over $30 at woollies & you get a discount voucher printed out on your docket for 4c off per litre. a bonus in times like this when petrol is really expensive).
she wasn't actually all that sure where it was, since she's only been here for a short time herself. after a couple of minutes of friendly chat she suggested that we exchange phone numbers & she could help me get to the local playgroup which she's been attending. we did so & i was really pleasantly surprised to get an sms from her that very afternoon saying hello again & that she was pleased to meet me!
on sunday i got in touch with her again to find out more details about the playgroup on monday. there was another girl & her bub that were going to be attending for the first time also, so it had been arranged to meet at a a fourth person's house & we'd all drive there together, making it easy for everyone to find the place.
it was an excellent playgroup. really large, but friendly & well organised. it wasn't actually an official playgroup, but rather one organised by the salvos & held in their hall. there's even a coffee shop attached where hot or cold drinks & really nice cakes & snacks are only $1. bargain!!
on the way home from playgroup, i stopped to return a couple of dvds & decided to get a roll from the subway which was right next door. there was a girl in there who, from hearing her conversation with a moving guy who was standing with her, had just moved there that very day. we got chatting while waiting in line & after hearing her talk of her own little bub it was my turn to suggest exchanging numbers. i haven't contacted her yet since she was right in the throes of moving house, but i might send her an sms today, just as jessica did for me. it's nice to have a friendly contact when you don't know anyone yet. i'll probably contact her again before next monday & give her the details of the playgroup.
i might sms jessica sometime this week & see if she wants to catch up for a coffee or something. if the other new girl, denise, is up for it, then maybe i'll catch up with her, too. it's nice to make new friends. there's nothing like having a baby as a common interest to help smooth the way.
m-m-m-m-m, subway does have great rolls. making me hungry. obtw, what are "sms"? some kind of message i take it.

That's so cool - it's a bit like how people always chat at the vets. Babies and animals bring people together, no doubt about it.
