beef stir fry - 09:24 PM
i just cooked (& ate) probably the best meal i've ever made. it was just a simple stir fry with beef & shanghai noodles, nothing special, not even made to a recipe but just made as i always make it. for some reason everything came together perfectly to make it really, really good. yummo. that was delicious!
shaun of the dead - 07:14 PM
we saw shaun of the dead on dvd last night. really funny. pretty gory in some places but for someone like me who is scared really easily, it was not too hard to handle, despite me holding my Safety Couch Cushion* up in front of my face a couple of times .. just in case.
i heard a review of it on triple j a few months back & thought it sounded pretty funny, but i wasn't absolutely sure until i saw the shorts for it running at the video shop. scary, yes, but definitely funnier than it is scary. it is gory & scary enough though, that i wouldn't recommend it for kids.
it's a british comedy, too, so there are some really nice subtle pieces of humour in there, unlike many american comedies which feel they have to hit you over the head with it & then include some canned laughter just in case you don't get it the first time.
there was one scene in particular played out near the corner of a fence which had a very clever bit at the end that could easily be missed if you weren't paying attention. matt lucas ("i'm the only gay in the village!") from the british comedy tv series 'little britain' makes a small appearance in that scene as cousin tom.
this is the sort of movie that you could watch more than once & find something more each time you watch it. i'll be really surprised if this doesn't become a cult classic.
*Safety Couch Cushion: the closest scatter cushion on the couch which you grab & hold up between your face & the tv to block the view of any potentially Really Scary Bits® in a movie. is also useful for hugging when the boyfriend/husband/partner's shoulder isn't within snuggling distance, however, the shoulder & the cushion can be used in combination.
what noise does a .. - 04:21 PM
on the way back from the fireworks the other night, smiley was a bit grumpy, so we were trying to keep him involved in something fun & were asking him what noises different animals make.
"what noise does a pig make?" .. funny little snort that he does.
"what noise does a horse make?" .. "neeee!"
"what noise does a dog make?" .. "woof! woof!"
"what noise does a chicken make?" .. "buhhhhh, buh, buh, buh, buh."
as i continued to drive along the long straight road in the night, a wild hare came running out onto the road into the path of the car. i tried to avoid it by swerving, but it changed direction toward the car again.
i had to make the split second decision to either swerve again more sharply & put my family in danger or else to hit the hare.
"what noise does a hare make when it's being hit by a car?"
. . . . . . .
i'm terrible aren't i? i did feel bad. i even apologised to the hare, wherever he went. sometimes the best way to deal with a terrible situation is with humour. anyway, smiley doesn't understand quite enough to know that i was being awful.
too far out of town - 03:53 PM
i just called the number on the local paper to see if we could get it home delivered to the college. i suspected it might not be possible since there are no street names or numbers around the residences anyway, but he confirmed that with the answer, "sorry, love. no. too far out of town."
the college is about the equivalent of, at a guess, four or five city blocks away from the centre of town. too far out of town? rotfl!!! you gotta love country living.
underarm update - 01:54 PM
my underarm seems to be better. it seemed to sort itself out all on its on.
groceries - 11:52 AM
i was going to do some grocery shopping this morning, mainly for things for lunches during the week, but then smiley feel asleep for his morning nap. quite early for him compared to usual.
shroom will be home for lunch in just over half an hour, so since i have to take a dvd back to the video store anyway, i might just kill two birds with one stone & get lunch from subway which is right next door to the video hire place.
a sweet onion chicken teriyaki sub sounds pretty good to me. mmmmm yummmm.
hormonal - 11:46 AM
my emotions seem to be really quick to rise to the surface this morning. i'm not sure why. i could be hormonal, but it would be surprising if it was that time of the month since i haven't had a period since i was pregnant with smiley.
i'm getting het up really quickly at anything that's even slightly 'het-worthy'. lying next to smiley & giving him a cuddle while i fed him just now & telling him how much i loved him almost brought tears to my eyes. things which could possibly bug me are bugging me a lot.
odd. maybe it's the stuff that the naturopath has me on. could be playing havoc with my hormones.
