first solo tip trip - 10:40 PM

oh, did you you know that this trip to the tip was the firs time i've been to the tip all on my own & all because i wanted to, not because i was running an errand for anyone else? wow. my first solo tip trip. does that mean i'm a grown up now?

duck - 07:50 PM

i'd been forgetting to blog about this, but shroom just told his best mate over the phone so i'd better do it now before i forget again.

smiley was under the desk, was about to get up & was in danger of bumping his head, so i quickly said, "riley! duck!"

he replied, "quack, quack!"

the tip - 06:48 PM

i went to the tip this afternon. well, it's not called the tip anymore. it's not been called that for ages. now it's the 'refuse transfer station'. anyway, i went to the tip.

we don't have a recycling service at the college. there's not even a council rubbish service, in fact. an employee of the college comes to collect our rubbish from good old fashioned tin rubbish bins once a week, but it's all in the one bin, no recycling.

i want to try to do the right thing, so i've been keeping the recyclable rubbish separate to the normal rubbish. storage of it is a bit of an issue at this point. i've been using the one extra bin we have to put it all in outside under the carport, but i ran out of room in that pretty quickly, despite squashing the aluminium cans & plastic bottles as much as i could. so i started putting the crushed cans back into the empty coke cans cartons, but it's certainly not the best of solutions.

it was a bit of a mess taking it there today. since i've always had a council recycling bin before, it all went into the one bin. i wasn't sure what the different categories were at the tip, so it was all kind of thrown in together. what wtih shroom's almost empty coke can ashtrays (ergh. it's disgusting. i've asked if he'd mind using a real ashtray) in with the other stuff, it was a bit gross.

so i sorted through it all & divided it up into glass bottles (green & brown glass go together & clear glass has its own place), cardboard & paper, plastic bottles & aluminium cans.

turns out there was no place for the plastic bottles which i thought was a bit odd. i'm sure that plastic bottles are recyclable. i asked one of the other people there using the tip if there was a place for them & they seemed to think not. next time i'm there i might check at the office. i also wondered about steel cans. you know, from tinned food. i couldn't see a place for that. another one to ask about.

as i collect all of this rubbish for the next trip, i guess i'll try to keep them all separated into their different types so i don't have to do any sorting. we still have the issue of storage though. there's not really any room in the kitchen for three different bins as well as the normal (non-recycling) bin. even if there was room, things like the glass bin & the aluminium can bin would sit there mostly empty for ages, so it would seem like a bit of a waste of premium kitchen real estate.

hmm. i'll have to think about this one.

pointy grabby - 06:01 PM

when smiley wants something that he can't get to for some reason, he points at it with his whole arm & hand & makes his fingers do a frantic grabbing motion. it's really cute. *chuckle*

breastfeeding toys - 05:01 PM

at times, smiley likes to have amusement while he's breastfeeding. sometimes it's as simple as positioning us both on the couch in a manner that allows him to see the tv if it happens to be on. other times (& usually) he insists on bringing a toy with him that is neither small, nor easy to operate with his inside arm kind of stuck out from between my chest & his body.

the biggest toy (so far) that he's wanted to play with while on my lap feeding was one of those keyboard type things with the big keys on them that make notes or music or animal noises when you hit them. it's actually the one that's designed to go on the end of a cot for a much younger baby to kick with its feet. it's almost as long as he is tall. that was a bit of a challenge.

sometimes he'll have settled down for a good comfy feed & he'll suddenly realise there's a toy that he must have with him. he'll jump off my lap, run to get the toy & then come back with it & go right back to where he left off.

currently he's trying to draw on an old envelope with his red pencil while he feeds (& stretches my nipple out much further than i ever thought it would stretch, but not as far as he thinks it will stretch). he's also squirming around on my lap, contorting himself into all sorts of difficult positions. difficult for me, that is, to stop him from falling off my lap.

who'd have thought breastfeeding was such a strenuous activity? *chuckle*

awake again - 10:11 AM

smiley woke up again last night in the early hours similar to the other night & this time he went back to sleep relatively quickly & i didn't have to get up out of bed, but he still stirred in the night a lot. heaps more than usual. i'm pretty sure know i why though, because it's the same set of circumstances as the previous night & both of those nights are the reason why i'm so tired & grumpy today.

when he went for his afternoon nap, it was really quite late, we're talking around 6pm. normally he might be waking up from his nap at that time. the last two evenings that he's done this, he's slept all the way through instead of waking up an hour or two later.

i don't mind that he sleeps through, because it gives me some much-needed hands-free time, but i suspect that he's awake during the night because he's having too much sleep.

usually when he wakes from any nap he likes to have a breastfeed & if he's not napped for long enough, then i try to lie quietly with him & let him go back to sleep, but if he's going to make a habit of this waking up in the night thing, i think i might bring him out of the bedroom after he's had his usual amount of sleep & he can stay awake for an hour or two until a more usual bed time. i hope that he might then stay properly asleep during the night.

a little cranky - 09:54 AM

i'm in a bit of a bad mood today. not emotional like the other day, just cranky this time. i'm even getting grumpy at a woman i don't know on a blog i've read for the first time because she's doing all the things that a very new mum would do, such as adjusting to having a new baby around the house, & i'm thinking, "oh, for crying out loud, woman. just get a grip!" hehe.

this one's definitely because i'm tired.
