refund for the dog food - 11:17 PM
after such a shocker of a day, i had one win this morning, at least.
we started feeding mcgarnicle normal dry dog food as opposed to buying him pet mince from the butcher as we'd been doing in childers &, in fact, since he was a puppy.
there's some gross information following & talk of raw meat, so if you get turned off easily (or are pregnant as i know at least a couple of my regular site visitors are) you might want to skip the rest of this entry.
he's been throwing it up about every second night. big piles of chunky bits & sometimes just for variety, gross, slimy, liquidy puddles. you think it's foul reading about it? you should be the one having to clean it up.
i'd just bought him a whole twenty kilogram (forty-four pound) bag of the stuff last week before we realised that it was this stuff that was making him throw up. it cost over $40 for the stupid stuff, too. so much for saving money by buying in bulk. pah!
so i rang the 1800 number on the back of the bag to see if i could get a refund, since i really don't want to put up with coming out in the morning to a big pile of dog spew for another nineteen & a half kilos of the stuff.
they arranged it, no questions asked. okay, well there some questions, but i mean that they didn't argue about it, they just got the information they needed from me & said that they'll send a cheque. i wonder if the cheque will be for the full amount we paid for it? things in emerald are about 25% to 30% more expensive than in the city. either way, even just most of the money back will be good.
so it looks like we'll be going back to the pet mince from the butcher. we used to be able to get him special chicken mince made up with garlic & vegetables in it which kept him really healthy. then the shop closed down that made it. then at another place we found that had it, they couldn't make it up with the veges in it anymore for one reason or another (something about legislation & permits for cooking food, even if it's for pets).
ever since we couldn't get the one with the garlic in it, his health went downhill. his coat used to be the shiniest coat i'd ever seen on a dog, despite the fact that we hardly ever brushed him or washed him.
since the lack of garlic he gets a summer itch (or perhaps a change of season itch is more correct) which makes him scratch & scratch & scratch until it drives us as crazy as it obviously drives him. he's had kennel cough & allergies .. & all since he stopped having the garlic in his food.
so, i guess i have to add one more thing to the list of things i have to do around here to look after my family. i bought a big container of cheap minced garlic & i'm going to have to mix it into his pet mince which i'll have to find somewhere around here.
yuck. i hate dealing with raw meat, even good quality meat meant for humans which doesn't have blue & red & purple & disgusting smelling globules of offal in it. i don't even like cutting the fat off steaks. it's just so foul having to touch raw meat, let alone having to mush my hands into it to mix in the garlic & then separate it into single meal portions every time i buy a new bulk lot of it for the dog.
i wonder if the local pet supply shop might have some of the chicken mince like we used to buy? i doubt they'd have vegetables & garlic, but being in the country, they might be willing to make up some as a special order. that would be nice, but i'm not going to get my hopes up.
Have you tried tinned mackerel (?sp)? My parents used to add some of that to the dog's food and she always got a really shiny coat when eating it. I can't remember what is in it that helps, and the oil helps their bowels a bit too.
I always thought the country was more expensive too. But in the Sunday Mail it says that Emerald is the cheapest place to live if you want to retire.Maybe they were looking more at the cost of rent or to buy a place, because I know real estate is definately cheaper in the country.

We have the same problem with our dog, but its with the tins of dog food rather than the dry food. I have never thought of putting garlic in the dogs food, Ill have to try that one, he looks really healthy and has a lovely glossy coat but during the summer months he does tend to scratch somewhat. So thanks for the great tip, im going to try that one.
