big computer whinge - 09:30 AM
okay. there's a big whinge about computers coming up. i thought it best to warn you ..
why the hell won't computers just do what they're meant to do?!! argh!! it bugs the hell out of me!
firstly, our connection here sucks big time. it's great to have a connection (a billion times better than having to go to the library for internet) but it's really annoying when that connection periodically won't let you get to sites that you know are online & you know should not being getting a 404.
i tried to put my data drive into this computer this morning (we have three computers, one for shroom, one for me & one which is the gateway computer which connects both of our computers to the internet via a network. i'm currently using the gateway computer). i haven't been using my own computer beceause it won't keep its internet settings for some strange reason, so it was just easier to take my data drive out & put it into this one so that i could have access to all my usual files & pictures etc.
of course though, nothing is ever easy when it concerns computers. as soon as i'd swapped the hard drive over, the monitor wouldn't show anything. i rebooted a few times but still nothing. so i reseated the video card. that fixed it.
.. until it had booted up fine & then decided to do some weird 'auto-adjust' thing & wouldn't come back on again. more video card reseating & rebooting & it's been okay so far .. *touch wood*
then just before it froze up on me. this computer hasn't done that before. it's not a good sign.
oh, & i forgot to mention that when i did get some video happening, the computer gave me some message about backing up my hard drive (my data drive!) immediately because some s.m.a.r.t something-or-other (i assume that acronym stands for something important) tells me that it's about to have imminent failure!
it didn't tell me anything like this when i was using it in the other computer!
(okay, at least i know one thing is not caused by our connection. i just got this message from gmail when i reloaded the page for the millionth time trying to get to my gmail email: "Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience.")
so anyway, i left my hard drive inside this computer but have unplugged it. i'm going to see if shroom might be able to make a backup of it (a ghost of it, for those who are interested) just in case it really is about to blow a gasket .. so to speak. it's got all my pictures of smiley on it from pregnancy through to current & i'd be absolutely devastated if i lost those.
so that's my computer woes for this morning. i guess i'll line up some help from shroom for the weekend since he's the master of all computery things. he rules. (are you reading this, sweetheart?)
Have you considered a Mac? (Doh, I'm so predictable--sorry)
Don't you have your photos backed up on you FTP server or Flickr type service already? Or are you using your home computer for your hosting server?
I have a book by Steven Levy titled "Hackers." There is a little poem in the book that goes...
"I really hate this damned machine,
I wish they would sell it.
It never does what I want,
but only what I tell it."
Just "Cleaned" a friend's machine of all the viruses, robots, spam, zombies, trojans, malware, and other assorted spyware and junk. Funny... It actually works now.
