baby wrap - 01:52 PM
this could go under the baby category because it's something for the baby, but it's something that i made, too, so i think the creative category will win this time.
it's a wrap. angie showed me. it's for holding your kid close to you & leaving your hands free. my sling is similar & that style is actually featured at mamatoto, the site where i got the instructions for my no-sew simple piece of cloth wrap.
i did actually do a bit of sewing on it, just overlocking the raw edges since i do actually have an overlocker now.
on the (amreican) site they call it gauze & i was wondering what the hell sort of fabric that was until i looked at the picture for the nth time (after i'd already bought the wrong type of fabric) & realised that it was cheesecloth! anyway, so the only cheesecloth available was white, which is pretty much what i expected.
it looked rather like i was wrapped in a huge bandage. in fact, one person even said that, so i decided to tie dye it. i thought it would look nice coloured before they made that comment anyway.
i bought some dye from the supermarket, the only place that seems to sell fabric dye. it was just as well that i thought blue would nice, because i had a huuuuge range to choose from . there was black, blue, green & grey. me is thinking that people around here mainly use this stuff to dye work clothes. at least i didn't have to worry about a tough decision between lots of nice colours.
so last night i put twisted bits & put rubber bands on & i tie dyed it. i only dyed three fingers, too, & even that colour has mostly worn off already. heh. i rule.
so i took a picture of it. i'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. it's a rather large piece of cloth (5 metres/5.46 yards) so i can only show you a couple of the patterns on it. have a look at it here.
if you're wondering why i want this since i already have a sling, well, smiley's getting a bit heavy these days & the sling goes across just one shoulder. it's good for short spells in it, but if i have to carry him around for longer than just a ten minutes, it gets abit hard on the back. the wrap can be used in many different ways using both shoulders, so it's good for longer wearing times.
also, i lent my sling to jess to use while she's off visiting her family, since she was interested in trying different types of slings & i thought it was the perfect timing to try this new type. i'm very pleased with it. it's about the most versatile carrier i've come across, not to mention the cheapest!
