new words, drawing, recognising objects - 12:41 PM

an update for you (well, for me really so i don't forget in the future) on some of smiley's new skills.
he has heaps more words now, most of which i can't remember, but a few very recent ones are "clock", "star" & "naughty". he was pointing to some mcgarnicle poos on the carpet this morning (fortunately he doesn't go in the house very often, but when he's locked in overnight you can't really blame him if we don't wake when he whines) & saying "naughty." it sounds more like 'nordy'.
he was also pointing to the places where he drew on my plastic storage box with his crayons & saying, "naughty."
he's getting really good at drawing now, too. mostly he just scribbles all over the page, but he asks us to draw things for him sometimes (usually a cat or a car, but occasionally a chicken) & will colour them in. he does pretty well. obviously he doesn't keep within the lines, but he does a lot better than i would have thought for an almost twenty month old. you can definitely tell what particular object on the page that he's colouring in.
he holds his crayons really well. he doesn't just hold them in a clenched fist. he holds them with his thumb & three fingers like a grown up does & controls it with his wrist & fingers, not his whole arm. he has those skinny type crayons that are contained within a pen-like tube & which you twist the end to move the crayon part outwards as it gets used up.
he's also really good now at recognising objects in a book. we can read one of his picture books with him & ask him where a certain object is & he'll point to the right one.
he's such a clever little boy. 
viva la sinus infection - 11:59 AM

after almost a week & a half of that terrible cold/flu thing, today is the fourth day which my sinuses have felt worse than ever. i realised a couple of days ago that this wasn't normal sinus congestion. the whole left side of my head feels like it's about to explode .. that is, even more like it's going to explode than it did before.
firstly, my usual remedies weren't working anymore. i may as well have been doing nothing as far as the brauers sinus relief, eucalyptus oil on a hanky, breathed in via a steaming bowl of water & the steam vaporiser were concerned.
secondly, it felt different. blocked sinuses i can deal with. this pain .. well, four days of it is more than enough thank you very much. it's not just sinus congestion anymore, it's a full on sinus infection.
since it's a public holiday today, i couldn't see a normal doctor so i took myself to the hospital. when i finally got to see the doctor he checked my symptoms & had a kind of sigh when he confirmed that i was breastfeeding. he checked smiley's age though & it seems he's old enough to handle any flow through of the drugs he's putting me on.
i hate antibiotics, but i just can't stand the pain anymore. so a trip to the chemist (thank god they're open for two hours on a public holiday!!) & more than $45 later, i now have antibiotics, panadeine forte & a nasal spray.
oh .. & jellybeans to make me feel better.
i've taken my first dose of each one & am just waiting for the panadeine forte to do its magic. i hope it kicks in soon. i'm ready to take a shovel to the side of my head if only it would give me access to my sinuses & let me scrape the crap out of there that is causing this pain.
