gem hunting - 10:23 AM
on the public holiday on monday we went to rubyvale to buy some wash to take home so that we can fossick for gems at home in our own time. 'wash' is, as i understand it with my limited knowlege of mining, the leftover dirt & rocks from when the bigger machines have gone through it. the gems to be found in it aren't really of much use commercially, but it's fun to look for them & when they're polished up they look really pretty.
we bought ten buckets to make it worth the forty-five minute drive out there. we didn't keep the actual buckets, but tipped the dirt into a few hessian sacks which they provided for us.
i'd actually brought along some of those reusable shopping bags to put the dirt in for several reasons:
a) so that there wouldn't be any mess in the boot since hessian is such a loose weave but the shopping bags are pretty leak proof,
b) to make it easier to carry the heavy dirt &
c) to be able to distribute the load more evenly throughout the car.
but of course they had to use the hessian sacks instead despite me suggesting the bags, so:
a) there is dirt all through the boot,
b) they couldn't carry the full sacks & had to scoop some dirt out & split it up into more than the bags they'd initially used &
c) the back end of the car was weighed down really badly.
.. but what do i know?? *rolls eyes*
