faq about bahrain - 09:42 PM
a number of people have been asking some good questions about our move to bahrain, so rather than having to type it all out many times, i'll try to answer some of them below.
why are you going?
it's been a long time dream of shroom's to work overseas. the chance to go to another country, especially one with a totally different culture & language to our own, is not something we'd want to miss out on, so when he saw the job advertised, he went for it! there are travel opportunities within the scope of his job as well as the chance to move to other countries with the same employer. being able to live in another country gives you experiences that you simply can't get when you just visit!
will you be continuing your blog/journal?
absolutely! we plan to get adsl once we're set up in our own place, so as soon as we have an internet connection i'll be blogging again. i imagine there'll be a gap between when we arrive & when our connection is ready to go, but if i can find some internet cafes then i'll make updates when i can.
will you have to wear a head covering?
i doubt it. from what i understand, expatriate women do not have to wear the traditional full body covering. even some of the local women don't wear it. it depends on the family of the woman & how strict they are. from pictures, it seems that a high percentage of the local women do wear the full covering, but for others, conservative dress is acceptable.
do you know anyone there?
nope! at least not yet. i will miss my friends here, but i'm really looking forward to making new friends there. with a third of the population being expatriates, i expect that i'll meet a lot of english speakers, but i really hope to be able to make friends with some 'real' bahraini women, too, so that they might help me to learn about & to immerse myself into the culture.
will you see your family regularly?
the company will provide flights home for the whole family once a year. other flights to home & anywhere else are discounted so if we want to visit more often it'll be much more affordable than it might be otherwise.
what does your family think?
they'll miss us, but they're really excited! dad in particular is excited, since he's done lots of travel over the years, especially during his time with the air force. he visited bahrain once. mum is just as excited since she has also done a fair bit of travelling & knows how great it can be. i think of everyone in my family, my sister (i mean my older sister, monica) is probably the least keen for me to be going away. she wouldn't deny me an experience like this, but i think she'll miss not being to chat over the phone quite as often as we usually do. shroom's mum & dad have travelled quite a bit & are also very excited for us to have this opportunity.
how long will you be gone?
it'll be at least two years, but if the truth be told, i'd like it to be longer. i really hope that shroom likes the company enough that he'll want to stay with them for a long time & that we might be able to go to other countries to live .. with this company or another one, i guess. i would like to return to australia eventually, but travelling & living in many places around the world really appeals. i think it'll be good for all of us.
Oh my God. This is totally huge! My head says -Wow, what a great opportunity. My heart says NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just as i'm returning to australia you're planning on leaving! bahrain sounds wonderful and if given the opportunity i'd be there in a flash! cant wait to hear all about it!

Wow. Did I miss something or is this the first time that this has been on the blog?
What a fantastic adventure--I'm so glad you're going to keep the blog going so we can go with you, as it were.
As far as talking to your sister goes, I'd recommend Skype. I have a friend who's daughter is in Italy and she talks on Skype with her all the time. Long distance for free! Can't beat that.
