protests & riots - 12:55 AM

one of the bahrain bloggers who wasn't actually there tonight but who told me that it was on, has a rather excellent & informative blog. you may have heard in the international news about some violence, protests & riots which have been going for a day or two in manama (the capital city) in bahrain. i hadn't actually heard anything about it until this morning when shroom mentioned it to me, so obviously it didn't affect where we live, but in case you're interested, you can read an excellent account of it here. it's worth reading back to the previous entry also, to which he has provided a link.

bringing in foreign laborers is a problem in most countries. with all the construction going on in that country i can see where this leads. its sad, but its a matter of "how cheap do you want it?". someone can build a house for $XXX with cheap foreign labor or build it with local craftsman for twice as much. locals get employment but no one can afford the house. its a sad game played everywhere by the big money, smokey room folks. to make this point even more, the philippines' largest national product is exporting labor. they are working all over the pacific and mid-east. why? simple, because they are cheap labor and someone makes more money.
