pork - 08:20 PM
within islam, eating pork is forbidden, therefore many places don't have any pork products available. however, supermarkets & malls that are built & stocked almost exclusively for expats do have pork.
the other afternoon, we went out to an asian restaurant for a late lunch. as we were perusing the menu i hadn't actually noticed that there wasn't any pork there until we were very quietly offered another menu, exactly the same as the ones we had, except that it was opened to a page that had meals containing pork.
i'm guessing that this happens in quite a few places. the 'normal' menus are offered & distributed openly in places which are frequented by muslims to avoid offending anyone. the pork menus are only offered to non-muslims .. & very surreptitiously, at that. i'll bet that if we shouted out loudly in glee, "oooh! pork!!" we'd be hushed very quickly & might get some very disapproving looks.
shroom & i wondered if some very strict muslims might not even enter a restaurant or place where food is offered if pork is on the menu.
besides the bacon and ham i'd have to add a pulled pork bbq sandwich.
