i think i've found a solution to the region problem.

on further investigation into this matter, it seems that it is the software, power dvd, which has been permanently set to region 4, not the hardware. this isn't terribly helpful since most of the dvds we hire here certainly won't be australian. bugger.
looking at the help files, seems you can't change it once it's been set, either. what a stupid system.
i could email them to ask, but i'd bet my life that they'll tell me that no, it can't be changed, or that yes, it can, but i'll have to buy the full version of the next version of power dvd. shroom & i have version 5 & the newest one is version 6. who thought of that whole stupid region idea, anyway?

lately i've been playing some dvds in our computer dvd players & when i've put some of them in, the player (the software, that is) has asked something about a region for the dvd & told me that it had x number of times left. i wondered what it was about until i put the teletubbies dvd into his computer just before & it told me it wouldn't play it anymore because the dvd player (the hardware, i assume, but hope not) has now been set to region 4 & that the dvd wasn't region 4. it had reached it's xth time, i guess. 
how stupid. what's the point of having a dvd player in your computer if it's limited to one region, i ask you?!!
i'm still looking into sorting it out, but haven't had a chance to look properly yet as it's rather hard to concentrate when smiley is jumping about & insisting on one thing or another. it was the only place (aside from my computer which has been asking the same thing but hasn't asked for the last time yet & now i'm not so keen to put it in there & have it also set permanently to a certain region) that would play the teletubbies dvd since the 'proper' dvd player downstairs wouldn't play it because of the wrong region.
*sigh* what a pain in the bum.
needless to say, if any of you have experience with this, perhaps you can point me in the right direction. i'd be forever grateful.

we finally bought ourselves a video camera! we actually bought it about two weeks ago but i forgot to blog about it.
we got a jvc hard drive video camera. here's a link to the jvc site about the everio series, with flash etc, & here's a non-flash link & review for those on slow connections.
we're pretty impressed by it, so far. it takes still shots, too, but they're nothing to write home about. as melanie said, if we wanted some still shots, we could always take a frame from the moving images.
i've never owned a video camera before so i really don't have much to compare it to, in fact, i've only ever used one once before when shroom's mum & dad lent us theirs, but i like how small it is, i like that it's got a lot of storage space (20gb) & it seems to weigh hardly anything.
it can take an sd card (& we got one & set it to store still images to it) but i don't see that we'll have to use it much. if i have any more thoughts on it, i'll be sure to post them here.
shroom in brussels - 12:36 PM

shroom's gone on a work trip to brussels in belguim. he'll be away for a week. he only left last night & i kind of miss him a bit already. i think he's still waiting for his connecting flight to brussels from heathrow airport. he might have another few hours to go. he managed to email me from an internet kiosk at the airport.
even though i'll miss him, there are some nice things about having the house to ourselves. smiley & i can spread out as much as we like on the bed. it doesn't matter if he goes to sleep late because i don't have to be up at any certain time to take shroom to work or pick him up if i needed the car for any reason. which leads me to the other thing being that i have the car all the time.
he's not been to europe before & from what he reported to me, his schedule isn't going to be totally flat out, so he might even have time to look around just a little bit. i hope he enjoys his trip.
he took the video camera (we finally bought one!! i forgot to blog about it. it's a jvc hard drive camera. i'll post some links from a separate entry) so let's hope he takes some video footage so i can get a little look-see as well.
