gastro update - 08:58 PM

he's been taking in fluids as slowly as i can give them to him, mostly water, a little bit of lemonade with the bubbles knocked out, some weak ribena & a couple of boobie feeds, but has still been vomiting, although only a few times since this afternoon.

he still has no interest in anything solid, not even a slice of plain bread or a cracker, but i'm trusting that his body knows what it needs & doesn't need as far as that is concerned. besides, what could i do if he doesn't want it .. tie him to the ground & force feed it to him?

he's slept heaps more than usual & is asleep now. sleep is a good thing.

everything he & i have touched since early this morning smells vaguely of vomit. it's just as well i love him so much so that it doesn't bother me in a big way. *wink*

he perked up considerably this afternoon (as opposed to puking up which he was doing for most of the morning) after we picked up shroom from work. he was chattier & more active than i'd seen him all day, so hopefully that's a good sign he's beginning to recover.

gastroenteritis - 02:55 PM

poor smiley's suffering from gastroenteritis. he had a mild case of diarrhoea yesterday, but nothing severe enough to cause any worry. however, last night starting from about 2:30am, he woke every hour to have a spew & then from about 4:30am had severe diarrhoea to go along with it.

i'd been giving him water to drink since he started getting sick, but it seemed to be going in one end & then back out again .. back out of both ends. he was passing almost pure water.

so this morning i drove shroom to work, with a large plastic bowl perched on smiley's lap, & then picked up kalyani (our housekeeper who's lived in bahrain for fifteen or more years) to help me take smiley to the doctor since i didn't know where it was located.

he was given an injection to stop the vomiting, which didn't work completely but seems to have reduced the frequency, & prescribed some other medicines, which he hasn't kept down.

he's not hungry at all, but is quite thirsty, as you can imagine. i've been trying to keep his water consumption up by giving him tiny amounts of water, a sip at a time, but he still seems to be throwing most of it up.

since last night we've each gone through four to eight changes of clothing & many bath towels & tea towels used for mopping up or trying to avoid messes.

he's been just sitting around listlessly near me or on me & is now asleep for the second time today on the couch downstairs. this is the first time i've been able to leave his side. poor little smiley.
