kalyani is our much-appreciated housekeeper. i've mentioned her before. most weekday afternoons she takes smiley for a few hours while i go to the gym. often i'll walk to her house when it's time to pick him up.
one time i went inside & she'd been cooking. kalyani is sri lankan & when she cooks for herself she cooks very spicy-hot sri lankan food, of course. the air was so thick with strong spices that i literally had trouble breathing. i couldn't get a full sentence out because i couldn't help but to cough every few words. my eyes were even stinging a little bit!
i imagine if i'd been inside when she'd begun cooking it might not have been so bad since i would have had a chance to acclimatise, like smiley, as he didn't seem bothered at all. however, walking from outside into that small space (her house is tiny, although she's going to be moving house to a bigger one soon) & into air fully laden with hot, hot spices, it was really quite overwhelming!
