going exploring - 07:50 AM

yesterday we did a bit of exploring. we took a taxi up to doi su thep. it's a large mountain where there's a precious religious relic which, according to legend, was taken up there by the auspicious elephant (whenever the elephant is mentioned, it's always 'auspicious'. shroom & i were having a joke about it for the rest of the day. everything was auspicious). a temple has been built there to house the relic. it's not really housed as such, it's put up at the highest point of the temple so that no shadow will fall across it.

on the way there, our taxi took us through some of the busier parts of chiang mai & to my slight disappointment, i did, in fact, see a mcdonalds & a few big electronics malls etc, but it's still nothing like some other big cities in the world where you see the same shops, the same big brand names, the same western influence.

we went out for a few drinks last night to a bar down the road, just a two minute walk. there were the everpresent 'phalung' (white man) hanging about waiting for their favourite bar girl to turn up & some others (even a couple of western girls at one stage) just there for a drink. at one stage, all the westerners there were australians. we chatted to a couple of the aussie guys for a while, but mostly we talked to the bar girls. i danced a bit with them & they loved it!

one girl, mam, about twenty-two years old, hung out with shroom & i the whole night rather than finding customers & she looked after us really well. she made sure our drinks weren't empty (i was having water alongside my bailey's & cointreau so i wouldn't feel so terrible the next day & she kept my water & ice topped up as well as another drink when i wanted one), supplied us with face towels occasionally to freshen up, got us snacks to eat.

say what you like about these bar girls & how they make a living, but from a sociology point of view, they're amazing to watch. they're master observers & seem to know what a person needs even before the person they're looking after knows it. anyone in any type of customer service role would do well to watch & learn from these girls.

since we stayed out so late last night, we unfortuantely had to pass on the hill tribe tour today. i'm a bit disappointed about that, but i'm still glad that shroom & i had a nice night out. *smile*
