bangkok's new international airport - 06:12 AM
(filed under 'general')
one of my site visitors was wondering about suvarnabhumi, the new interntional airport in bangkok. it's quite nice! very airy & open. it's very bright with glass & silver everywhere. the metal beams, the air conditioning system, pipes & support beams are all silvery grey & there's lots of glass around so that there's plenty of natural light. they've decorated it really nicely with heaps of thai art over the walls, very old & very new, but they've mixed them well. there are lots of plants through the place, potted beautifully in free-standing gorgeous clay pots, or set into lovely open-sided wooden cabinets.
from a logistics point of view, apparently they've been having lots of trouble with the movement of baggage (our only bad experience there was probably nothing to do with the international airport, but rather at the other end when shroom's suitcase ended up going to the international carousel at chiang mai instead of the domestic one along with mine. just as well it was such an easy fix!) where it's been taking up to four hours for people to be able to collect their bags.
i did note when we checked in for our flight to chiang mai, that they had a baggage handler stationed at each check in point to unstick the bags as they rolled off the weighing station & onto the main conveyor belt. to me, it looked as though the conveyor belts were just a bit too narrow to allow each piece of baggage to roll off smoothly. you know there's been a mistake made when they have to have an extra staff member at each intersecting point just to make sure the bags keep moving. i guess employing double the original number of staff is still cheaper than ripping up the whole check in area & starting again.
other than that (& our original flight being cancelled, which was probably nothing to do with the new aiport), our experience there was fine & enjoyable. smiley got a bit bored during the three hour wait, but between shroom & i & the miles of travelators, we managed to keep him mostly amused. let's hope our trip back through suvarnabhumi on the way back to brisbane is just as uneventful.
