form & function - 09:40 PM

i'm really happy with the colour scheme that i have going on here at my new place. i chose the black (actually black/brown, to be precise) furniture mainly because it's a convenient colour to which i can match other colours, but it's worked out very well with the combination of the black, very square furniture, & the softer, more natural looking rattan baskets.

they're square, too, but they have softer lines what with being made from rattan (whatever that is) & being woven as they are. it also lifts the mood a little so that everything isn't quite so black.

with the black big pieces of furniture & natural wood colour of the baskets, it leaves it open to include a few other colours as features to help brighten up the place & to add a bit of flair. one thing which monica convinced me would be good on a jaunt we took together to ikea, was a pack of these brown & white florally magazine files. i wouldn't have thought of using them, but i trusted her judgement & they do indeed look good. she's great at that sort of thing. on more than one occasion she's pointed to this, this & this & i've thought, & maybe even said, "are you serious?" but when they've been put together, they look great. it's a skill. i don't have it, so i've come to trust my sister with it.

i don't yet have any of the pieces of flair which i just mentioned, but things like this, these or these are the sort of things which might work. these could be an option too, but after buying these cool silver looking stone things, i realised that if i want something to be a feature in the big black bookcases, that it's going to have to be a bit taller than flat stones, or at the very least, much more colourful. i'm still working on a good place for my silvery stones. maybe a collection of these in something like this or this could also look good.

some people have expressed surprise that i'm getting into decorating the house so much, or that i care about things being all matching & nice. that made me think. yes, it's true that it's not something which usually consumes me, & i can certainly live without those things, but since i have the chance to start fresh, to have everything look nice & just the way i'd really like it to look, it'd be silly not to do it properly. i love functional things & that is very much me, but i do also appreciate form as well. *smile*

It's nice to start with a blank canvas and have it be pleasing to the eye AND not cost a bundle! I love the Ikea catalogue and carried it around with me for a week (with Post It notes at the ready!) One day I'll make the trek from the Northside to check out the store. I hear you need a packed lunch in order to cover it all!

i like the red salong vase. it will work nicely with the black. you'll need to find what to put in it. some sort of artificial long plant stems that are dark brown with tiny white or light pink flowers on them. just my thought. glad to see your on a trek. lol
