independence & confidence - 06:16 PM

one thing that i feel has made my life better is my confidence & sense of independence. i've put a lot of effort into helping smiley to develop these attributes, too.

for instance, as smiley has grown older & been able to complete certain tasks with less & less help from me, i've encouraged him to do these tasks on his own.

once simple example of this is when we have our weekly trip to the dvd shop to hire a childrens' dvd or two for him. i get him to hold the dvds he's chosen, take them up to the counter & put them up on top of the counter or give them to the person there himself. he's been doing this quite successfully for a couple of months now.

other times, if he has a question about something that's going on around us & it involves a person, i suggest he asks that person the question himself.

some more examples for you, which even caught me by surprise ..

the other day i went with smiley to a gathering in a park. it was quite a busy park & the play area was full of many kids & adults. i was sitting with our group on the grass, watching him play on the equipment. he made himself a friend on the slide, some kid who wasn't even with our group & played with him for about ten minutes or more. when he was done there, he wanted to go on the high monkey bars, but (obviously) was about three feet too short .. so i saw him rope in some taller & older kid that was standing nearby to lift him up to the monkey bars!

an example from today is that we went to a flickr meetup at ascot station to see & (almost) photograph a steam train go past. i gave a lift to one of the people going who wasn't able to get there by train, since (ironically enough) there was no normal train going there that morning. we each had a window open in the car on the way there & he was getting a bit blown about in the back seat, so he called out to the passenger in the front, "gweg [greg]! gweg! can you cwose your window pwease?"

seems my efforts have begun to pay off. *smile*
