tantrum in the shops - 05:33 PM
smiley chucked a huge tanty in the shops, today. biggest one for ages.
i bought him a small packet of balloons & a party banner thing (there's no party happening, but he insisted there was a party on) but then he wanted one more thing (after i'd already caved on buying him two things instead of just one). he started the tantrum there at the party aisle & kept it going all the way to the cash register.
he was still trying to go back to where the party things were & so i had to hold him under one arm while he was squirming & crying & trying to get down to run back there. mostly there were other mums standing around me who were saying, "gosh. usually it's my kid chucking the tantrum" or "mine would probably be doing it except he's at kindy today" & some were even offering help when i dropped something.
there was one lady, however, who was standing one aisle across who was shooting dirty looks at me the whole time smiley was chucking his tantrum. i don't know what her problem was. maybe she wanted me to smack him or something to make him stop having a tantrum, but she mustn't have kids, because if she did, she'd know that certainly wouldn't have settled him down at all.
i felt like saying, "oh, i'm sorry. has my child throwing a tantrum made you have a bad afternoon?" stupid bloody woman. how rude. maybe i should have asked her to take him & make him stop if she was so concerned that i wasn't doing it right.
anyway, once i'd finally paid for everything & wrangled him out of the shop, dropping more things on the way, i sat down with him on a seat & gave him some boobie. he settled down almost right away & lo & behold, fell asleep on me within about seven minutes. there was the reason for the tantrum, right there. he was tired.
it was such a relief when he went to sleep.
when he chucked his tantie, perhaps i should have pulled my camera out & taken pictures or video of it. that might have been more amusing for everyone involved. maybe then i could have recorded everyone's reaction, including the stupid woman shooting me dirty looks.
Sometimes kids who don't usually have tantrums do so when they are coming down with something. Maybe he doesn't feel well.
the video would have been a good idea if only to show smiley later. let him see and learn from the his behavior experience.
OR you could have videoed it to screen it at his 21st birthday!
Gawd I hate when people glare at little kids having a tanty in stores. They either don't have kids or just don't understand them, or it's been so long since their kids were little they've forgotten what it can be like!

Must be the week for it ... Alia chucked a beauty when we were leaving my aunt & uncle's place on Sunday because her remaining half-lunch (untouched for the past 45 mins) had been cleared away and she decifded she wanted it after all. My aunt and uncle, experienced grandparents themselves, just chuckled quietly and helped us bundle the kids into the car. Fortunately Alia's tanty wasn't physical - just a lot of sobbing and "I want my lunch! I need my lunch!" and it was also a tiredness one - she was asleep within 2 mins of the car starting.
