a response to charles winokoor, supposed business writer - 08:25 AM
(filed under 'general')
i sent an email to the man who wrote this terribly amusing article.

At the beginning and the end of your article it states that you're a business writer. That's odd, because I could have sworn you were trying to be funny. Perhaps you should add 'comedian' to your title as well?
I laughed and laughed! Yes, I did. Not with you, though, at you.
Actually, I shouldn't laugh, because it's not nice to laugh at someone who seems to have issues with what are, for most of us, normal day-to-day occurances. Perhaps you should be seeing a therapist about these problems of yours?
As for Melissa Tracy and your wish for her to take her child to the bathroom to feed him, perhaps you'd like to go and eat your lunch in the toilet next time you're hungry? I imagine it's not then nicest place to eat. Public bathrooms usually smell pretty bad. In fact, they probably smell about as bad at that pet supplies aisle in the supermarket of your dream.
Just as well that was only a dream. It's a shame that it's not a dream that others would let a mother feed her child whever she chooses, because expecting someone to sit in a stinking bathroom to nourish their child is about as rude as allowing one's pets to void themselves in the aisle of a supermarket.
I hope your delicate sensibilites weren't offended too much by this awful woman imposing her "version of an enlightened society" upon you. You really should get therapy, because if you don't rush off immeditely to talk to a professional about all this angst you've been put through, it might just ruin your life forever.
My absolute sincerest regards to you,
Coralie
While I agree absolutely with Coralie's response and the idiocy of Monsieur Le Business Writer, I feel compelled to point out, Dave, (NB as an extended breastfeeder myself!) that the human breast IS actually a sex organ, just not ONLY a sex organ. It has a primary and secondary function (primary being nutritive). The real problem is Western society's skewed vision that does not allow observers to see a breast without relating it to sex. Hence their discomfort / angst etc about seeing a flash of breast tissue behind a feeding baby's head.
I personally fed both my daughters in all manner of places (but never in a public toilet - how gross!) and perhaps I was lucky but I never encountered overt hostility or resistance, although some people certainly are more comfortable with it than others.
go girl you rock. to even suggest that you feed a child in the restroom shows what an idiot he is
What a small world it is. I grew up in Hingham Masschusetts
Kathy, i applaud your decision to nourish your children naturally. too many are formula fed at a too early time and the mother's natural milk supplements cannot be duplicated in the lab. however, we can agree to disagree on the issue of the female breast being a sex organ. i cannot find any authoritive reference that states that they are. the idea that this has become an issue has always perplexed me. i have theories as to how this happened, but, alas, no facts as yet. thanks for the feedback. idea exchanges are a good thing.

the whole matter of being against breastfeeding in public astonishes me. what's the point? i don't get it. the female breast is not a sex organ. why is it considered as such. it seems to be a western culture thing as other places i've been don't have a problem with this issue. will we ever get out from under the old european puritan influence?
