funky newtown - 12:35 PM

(entered on my handheld while in sydney & uploaded later.)

no wonder people like sydney. personally, i'm particularly taken with newtown, which is not far from where hellie lives & a ten to fifteen minute train ride from the city. for those familiar with brisbane, i'd compare newtown to fortitude valley, at least in regard to funky shops & the eclectic atmosphere.

just sitting down somewhere & watching people go by is interesting. everyone is out & about with a variety of hangers-on: a kid or two, a dog or two. there are so many different types of people around & you can spot any type of clothing being worn from young & funky to tartan & chains to hippy. even old ladies were out in their best clothes & rouged cheeks.

the shops cover almost any type of wares you could name. funky clothes, designer clothes, vintage clothes, punk. food from all over the world. cute bags, purses & shoes. housewares, decor, furniture. even the buildings housing the shops are awesome, all old style, from the late 1800s through to circa 1920 or 1930.

a flickr friend who lives in sydey & who visited brisbane a couple of months ago, commented that he fell in love with brisbane on his short visit. i don't see it. i mean, i like living there but despite my earlier comparison of newtown to fortitude valley, brisbane really has nothing like this place. it has corporate giants & over-exposed brand names, but no real character as newtown does. perhaps he's just not the newtown type & prefers the laid-back, large country town feel of brisbane.

mind you, it's probably a good thing that i don't normally live anywhere near newtown. if i did, with all the funky & unique things there, i'd have a lot of trouble sticking to a budget.
