relaxing in melbourne - 08:26 AM
(entered on my handheld while in melbourne & uploaded later.)
i've been in melbourne for two days, now. it's been very different to my trip to sydney. in sydney i seemed to be much busier. since hellie & nicola were working, there were definite plans around the times that they weren't working, but as sherry is on holidays, we've been taking each day as it comes & allowing our plans to change as other people have input.
on the day that i arrived, sherry picked me up from the airport at around 11:30am. we were both hungry by then, so we headed off to lygon street to find a place to eat. we found a sandwich bar inside a building near borders bookshop which had the most delicious sandwiches & desserts, where we ate & talked for about an hour before heading back to the car in an unhurried & relaxed manner. it was lovely to not feel the need to be going anywhere in particular.
after arriving back at her place, we got comfortable on one each of the two couches facing each other, talking & relaxing & gradually sinking down to a position where we both dropped to sleep for about an hour. sherry's man, peter, arrived home from work later & he & sherry made a lovely dinner of vegetables & pasta. despite our afternoon nap, we were both still really tired & headed off to bed relatively early.
we thought it odd that we were both so tired when we hadn't really been doing anything all that tiring. i suppose that travelling is always more tiring than i think it is, though. sherry was winding down for her holidays from work, too. it was nice to have the freedom to just relax & rest when we needed it.
yesterday we went to a book store called 'success centre' & bought a few books each. i bought one on how to engender good attitudes toward money in your child, one about embracing change & an autobiographical story about a man that coaches a children's baseball team.
we then went to grab some lunch to take with us to sherry's parents' house. i had a lovely visit with them. i've known them for as long as i've known sherry, of course, which is since we were about eleven years old. when my family & i moved to from melbourne to brisbane all those years ago, sherry's mum sort of warned her that sometimes friends don't keep in touch, thinking perhaps that we might drift apart or be not so good at writing letters. well, we weren't so great at writing regular letters, but we never drifted apart. twenty years after i moved & here we are, as close friends as ever.
there were times over the years when we've had minimal contact, but every time we've spoken or been back together in person, it's as though no time has passed at all.
my cousin, heidi, & her man, brett, moved to melbourne late last year, so we've arranged to meet up with them & they'll be coming around for dinner tonight. sherry & peter haven't met them before, but i have a feeling they'll all get along really well.
we don't have any firm plans for today except to get some vegetables for tonight to roast for dinner.
