smiley's cricket - 08:58 AM
smiley wanted to bring a cricket to bed with us last night.
for some reason, we get a lot of crickets in the house. usually only one at a time, but during summer, we would get at least one cricket every evening. i think they come in through the sides of the rolling garage door & then simply walk under the rather large gap between the floor & the sliding door that leads from the garage into the house. they're almost always lame, too .. & that's before smiley gets to them.
so last night he found one just as we were about to head upstairs to bed. he picked it up & sort of continued on as though he was going to take it up the stairs with him. i said quickly, "he has to stay down here."
smiley tried to convince me with the calmness & assurance of a lawyer (or perhaps a con man) that the cricket did, indeed, want to come upstairs. at first he tried, "but he wants to sreep [sleep] wiff us!" when i suggested that we put him back in the garage to sleep with fiona (the car) instead, he told me, "but he'll get fwightened!"
every reason i came up with why the cricket wasn't going to hop into bed with us, he countered with a reasonable & logical (for a three & a half year old) argument. in fact, if it wasn't for the cute lisps etc, i could well have been arguing with an adult, albeit a very short one with a rather high-pitched voice.
i tell you, this kid is the master of excuses & reasoning. his excuse skills really come to the fore when i'm trying to leave nanna & poppy's place when he wants to stay, but also wants me to stay.
for instance, if audrey's out, but due back soon:
- "but nanna wants to see you, too!"
or if i'm picking him up to take him home after a sleep over & he wants to stay longer:
- "but hi-5 is on da phone!"
- "i'm just looking for somefing!"
- "i just need to get a dwink!"
or if he wants a new drink/food before he's finished the first one:
- "but dere's a bug in it!"
- "but dere's a hair in it!"
he comes up with these exuses with much enthusiasm & always accompanied by pointing, waving of the hands in the air (italian heritage much?), or running off in the direction of the supposed reason for not being able to do what i've asked him to do (the phone, the kitchen, etc).
it's really quite amusing, so much so that i have yet to be able to muster up any anger about being delayed, & rather impressive. this kid is bright, i tell you.
