strange daytime sleep habits - 12:30 PM

i can't figure out smiley's daytime sleep habits. for a few days there, i thought perhaps he was growing out of his daytime nap. you see, most days he was having his sleep later & later in the day, perhaps even as late as 4 or 5pm. many times when he's gone to his nanna & poppy's to visit them & his daddy, he's not had a day sleep at all & has simply gone to bed early & slept all night. recently, he's even not had a day sleep but has gone to bed his usual late night time!

the last few days, though, despite sleeping in until 8 or 9am, he's then fallen asleep before 1am! we haven't been doing anything differently, so i don't know why his sleeps are all over the place like that.

before you ask, let me tell you that i have tried to influence his sleeping patterns. it was all to no avail. eventually, i just came to the conclusion that unless he's ready to sleep, there's no way that he'll fall asleep any sooner & that if he's ready to sleep, there's nothing you can do to keep him awake. even his nanna & poppy have the same experience with him.

i suppose i'm expecting that he'll change his sleep patterns to grow out of his daytime nap in a linear & predictable fashion, but really, when i think about it, as an adult i don't do much in a linear & predictable fashion, so why should i expect that of him as a child, especially when he shows many of the same mental, physical & emotional traits as i do?

hmm. i think i just answered my own question.

as a child, i was forced to sleep and get up at certain times. i'm a natural night person and i never could sleep at those times. i think it probably screwed my sleep patterns forever. i agree with you to let his sleep patterns develop naturally.
