gradually self-weaning - 07:22 AM

smiley seems to be getting closer to weaning. i haven't initiated it, he just seems to be having less need lately for the breast.

in the past month or so, he's gone from wanting boobie about five or six times a day (& often only a quick 'sip' many of those times) to wanting it only when going to sleep or waking up. he used to always want boobie when he woke, but these days it's not everytime he wakes in the morning that he wants boobie. sometimes he's happy to just wake up & move onto whatever is of interest to him at the time, such a toy that he was playing with or a dvd he was watching the previous night.

he almost always still falls asleep on the boob, but some nights he'll have boobie for a few minutes, rest his head on the breast then fall asleep like that or perhaps move to a different position, not even leaning on me, but perhaps just having an arm over me or his foot touching me, before then falling asleep.

boobie was almost always a must when he hurt himself, but on a few occasions lately, he's not gone straight for the boob. i'll offer it if he's hurt himself, because it's a fail-safe way of making him feel better. sometimes now though, he'll just go for a cuddle or maybe a kiss on the sore spot.

very occasionally now, whereas before it was almost all the time, he'll want some boobie before i leave him at his nanna & poppy's house, but that's the exception rather than the rule these days. it happens so occasionally, in fact, that it's surprising when he asks for boobie before i leave.

mostly now, he has boobie only two times a day, maybe three.

it's kind of sad for me that he's growing up & needing me less in the way that he has so much since he was born, but it happens. he's turning four in just over a month. it was a good run. many kids self wean long before this age.

it's nice to know that kids rarely stop needing their mum, even after they've grown up. he's more cuddly lately & sometimes even comes to gives me a hug & a kiss just out of the blue. i suppose that's the replacement for the boobie &, from my point of view, it's lovely. *smile*
