a short holiday in gorgeous byron bay - 03:20 PM
(filed under 'general')
as i mentioned previously, smiley & i went to byron bay to have a short holiday there with sherry, my best friend from melbourne. i had such a lovely time! smiley was still being his spingly self as he has been lately (i'll mention more about that later), but between sherry & i we handled his behaviour & still had a really nice time.
we stayed for four nights in an absolutely gorgeous holiday house. it's a three bedroom place that sherry found via a friend of a friend. it's such a beautiful place. sherry arrived one night before i did & called me when she got to the house to tell me how gorgeous it was. i was really impressed with it when i arrived. the place is fitted out with everthing you could need to stay for ages. we copped out & bought most of our meals, but we could have cooked every meal if we wanted to. even the bathroom fittings, which are usually a good indicator of the quality of a house, seemed to be top quality. everything was clean & tidy & looked gorgeous. the house was so airy & bright. it was a beautiful place to stay.
byron bay is a small, very hippy-like town. it's less hippy-like than it used to be & much busier these days, but it still has some of that lovely relaxed feel about it. there are some big chain stores there (surf shops, woolworths, phone/camera shops, etc.) but most of the shops are individual little stores that exist only in byron bay, full of marvellous organic food, or awesome clothes or accessories by byron bay designers.
the place we were staying was just off the beaten track. in fact, it was only about one hundred metres or so (around 330 feet) from a fairly busy roundabout, but you wouldn't have known it. every day we took at least one leisurely walk into town to look around or to get some lunch or dinner. walking slowly with smiley, it took about five minutes to reach the outskirts of town & only ten to reach the middle of town.
while walking into & around town, we noticed quite a few people on bicycles. since it's such a small place, getting around on bike is quite easy & a really nice way to see everything. also, parking in town is fairly limited since it's a much busier place than it used to be ten years ago, & most street parking is limited to one or two hours.
we didn't do too much touristy stuff since we mostly felt like just relaxing, but the one thing we did do is to go up to the lighthouse. you can't go to byron bay & not see the lighthouse. it's the one place that you really must see evenif you've been many times to byron bay & have been to the lighthouse each time. it's gorgeous up there. it's at the top of a cliff on the most easterly point of mainlnd australia & you can see all around you for miles or look at the rocks & the gorgeous colours of the ocean down below.
the weather was gorgeous the whole time. when it rained, it only did so at night. one night at about 2 to 3 am, there was a spectacular thunderstorm. sherry & i both woke up to the heavy rain & the incredible thunder. i lay there listening to the rain thinking how incredibly heavy it was, only to hear it start to beat down even harder! my blinds weren't open, but i could see the flashes of lightning through the open door. we were directly under the storm. even living in brisbane as i do, where we get some pretty impressive storms, i think that this was the heaviest storm i've ever experienced. when we spoke about it in the morning, sherry said she was amazed at the power of it. she's never been right in the middle of one so fierce, either. at lunch the next day we asked the shop owner if it was unusual & he said that storms like that are quite common around this time of the year. it was certainly impressive.
we went to the beach three times while we were there. the first & third times i took smiley paddling in the water & the second time sherry, smiley & i went into the water more, although smiley only went as far as his bottom. the water was a bit chilly, but as long as you went slowly, it wasn't too cold to deal with easily.
i had such a lovely time away. it was great to be able to see sherry again, considering we hardly ever see each other since she lives in melbourne. smiley's behaviour was a bit hard to deal with at times, but it was good having sherry there to help out & give some feedback. all in all, i had a really nice time.
Why do you think he was being spingly? Could it be because someone else was getting your attention apart from him? Hope his behaviour improves for you!
sounds like a good time. i like arty colonies, they can be so laid back.
Looks like quite the place to up and retire.
