where the wild things are - 02:06 PM

smiley & i took a day trip to byron bay the other day (after our four night stay, we couldn't stay away for very long) & while there we went to a bookshop where i found where the wild things are.

i loved that book as a kid, so as soon as i saw it, i decided to buy it.

smiley's requested that i read it to him quite a few times already. i wondered at first if he might find it a bit scary, but no. i wasn't scared by it as a child, either, but i think that i had it, or read it, when i was older than he is now.

it's such a great book. reading it as an adult, i now understand more of it than just the apparent story. for starters, i know that the forest that grows in max's bedroom is just from his imagination, as is the whole trip out to where the wild creatures are. i also understand that since his supper is still hot when he gets back from being king of the wild things, that he mustn't have been off in his imagination very long at all, although in his mind it seems he was gone for at least one night, & of his boat trip it states that it took 'almost over a year'.

i noticed that the moon through his window is full when he returns, whereas when he left it was a crescent moon. it makes me wonder if his time away was longer, but surely it can't have been since it was in his imagination & since his supper was there in his room when he got back. i also wonder where he was (maybe under his bed?) when his mum came in to put his supper on the side table.

i know it's just a kids' story, but reading it as an adult leaves me with a lot more questions than when i was a kid. well, when i was a kid, i didn't have any questions. i just enjoyed it for the good story that it was. *smile*
