cheeky ibis - 08:22 AM

on tuesday when smiley & i went with some friends to the maritime museum, afterwards we stopped at one of the food places in south bank to get some lunch before going home.

smiley loved the signs that were glued to the middle of the tables. one of those '[something-or-other] not allowed' type signs: an object in a red circle with a line across it. they're his favourite type of signs. this one was a 'no feeding the ibis' sign. the ibis can be a real nuisance there & we found that out a few minutes later.

smiley had pieces of chicken on a stick for lunch. you know, a shishkebab or whatever you want to call it. he was holding it relatively close to himself, but perhaps at a bit of an angle. one of the bigger ibis came up & grabbed the stick in his beak. smiley held on tight & didn't let go (i was quite impressed). although it didn't snap off completely, the stick bent & broke just above where smiley was holding it.

i grabbed at the stick myself to try to get the ibis to let go, but he wasn't having any of it. he woulndn't let go! i had to literally grab the creature on the beak & lift his beak off it to make him give the food back!

the chicken on the middle bit of the stick was all mangled up where the ibis had grabbed it, so i took those pieces off & smiley got to continue his lunch. i thought he might have been a bit scared, but he didn't get upset. i asked him later if he got a fright & he said that he did. i got a bit of a shock, myself.

naughty ibis. how dare he try to steal my child's food?!

Hmm - naughty people who feed wild animals in the first place so they then attack others for food!

i have seen those iris's take whole meals from people & peck at kidsto get their food - they are a bit scary but last time i was there a guy who works there was trying without success to get rid of them!
