rhinoceros beetle - 04:46 PM

i took smiley into the city earlier today to go to the sciencentre (which, incidentally, was packed. we had to wait in line for people to leave before we could go in). he had fun, but when he started going hyper & just running around like a mad thing, i knew he was tired & that it was time to go.
we had to change trains after one stop & while we were waiting for our second train, he started making 'music' on the seat. he was banging on one part & another, making his music. it was cute.
all of a sudden he started screaming his head off & waving his arms around frantically. somehow, a rhinoceros beetle had attached itself (by the legs, i'm almost sure) to the index finger of his left hand. those things are pretty big, & this one was almost as big as one of his little fingers.
he screamed for about three to five seconds. i was going to grab him to get the beetle off, but it then came off on its own. it lay on the ground on its back not moving. it was either dead already, was playing dead, or had died from fright from all the screaming going on!
poor smiley hugged me for a good twenty minutes of the train trip home before falling asleep on my lap. it hadn't hurt him at all, it had just felt weird, frightening & a bit of surprise, attached to his finger like it was. poor little darling. he got such a fright .. but by god it was funny when it happened: all the screaming & flailing. my poor little darling. *chuckles*
