andy warhol summer festival - 06:53 AM
last saturday, smiley & i went with some friends to the gallery of modern art for the andy warhol exhibition. it was excellent. the stuff they had for the kids was awesome. colouring, stamping, photo booths, play rooms, interactive touch screen quizzes.
one thing that annoyed me, though, was that the staff in two particular play areas that were keeping an eye on the safety of the exhibits & supposedly the kids seemed far more worried about the exhibits than the kids. the things were there for the kids to play with, yet they were being so anal about them!
for instance, in one room they had these big silver pillow like things filled with a mix of helium & normal air or something so that most of the balloons were not just floating upwards, but would also float around softly in the air & sink down so that the kids could push them back into the air. the staff were so jumpy with some kids being a bit more rough than they might have liked.
also, there was a space with some boxes made from a thick cardboard that were made to look like packing boxes from heinz or brillo products (something from some of andy warhol's art). they were allowed to stack the boxes up & knock them down, but not climb on them or throw them. one woman there was particularly freaked out every time a kid even looked as though he was going to climb on a box.
fair enough that the things needed to last the whole exhibition & then be sent back to wherever they came from, but for crying out loud .. these are kids! the exhibitions were put together for kids! if they were so damn worried about the durability of these things, then why make them accessible to children in the first place?! or why not make them tougher so that they can withstand the sometimes rough treatment that kids (especially boys) can give things. geez, they just need to look at tonker toys to realise that perhaps kids don't know how to be gentle until they're a bit older. derr.
anyway, aside from the freaked out & anal staff at those two places to play, the whole thing was awesome. the rest of the staff were great, really helped with the kids & got involved. smiley had a great day with all the activities & hanging out with his good friend, keaton.
smiley & i did the andy warhol-esque photo booth thing & emailed two pictures to ourselves. the following is the first one we did. smiley chose the colours.
